UFC 131: DOS SANTOS VS. CARWIN PAY-PER-VIEW CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 6/10/2011 6:51 PM
While we MMA fans lost Brock Lesnar in the UFC 131 main event, we did gain a massive slugger in Shane Carwin to replace him. Also on the card, Kenny Florian makes his featherweight debut and a key fight takes place in the middleweight division. Also for the fourth straight UFC card, every single fight from preliminary fights to the main event will be broadcasted.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division encounter as Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (14-3-0) takes on Vagner Rocha (6-1-0). Donald Cerrone made a successful transition from the WEC to the UFC at UFC 126, defeating Paul Kelly by submission. Vagner Rocha will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he has competed in both Strikeforce and Bellator. Donald Cerrone was way too skilled to fall to Vagner Rocha, who will be tapped out sometime in the fight.

Up next is an important middleweight division fight as Damian Maia (14-2-0) does battle with “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Mark Munoz (10-2-0). Damian Maia has railed out two straight wins since losing to Anderson Silva over a year ago, with one of those victories over Kendall Grove. Mark Munoz has won five of seven in the UFC, most recently defeating Aaron Simpson and CB Dollaway. This fight should be an entertaining battle, but it will be the slugger in Mark Munoz earning the victory.

Coming up next is a heavyweight attraction at Jon Olav Einemo (6-1-0) takes on UFC newcomer Dave “Pee-Wee” Herman (20-2-0). Jon Olav Einemo has not competed in a professional MMA fight in over five years, last defeating British slugger James Thompson. Dave Herman is also making his UFC debut in this fight, but has achieved victories over UFC veterans Don Frye and Ron Waterman. The long layoff is going to hurt Jon Olav Einemo as Dave Herman gets the victory in his long awaited UFC debut.

The co-main event takes place in the featherweight division as Kenny “Ken-Flo” Florian (13-5-0) takes on Diego “The Gun” Nunes (18-1-0). Kenny Florian makes his official featherweight division debut in this fight after competing thirteen times as a lightweight. Diego Nunes rides a three fight winning streak into this fight, with a notable victory over former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown. Kenny Florian is the bigger “name” fighter heading into this encounter, but it will be Diego Nunes getting one step closer to a title shot after it is all said and done.

Headlining this card is a heavyweight title eliminator as Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (12-1-0) faces Shane Carwin (12-1-0). Junior Dos Santos has recently come off a coaching stint on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 13 and has won all six of his UFC fights. Shane Carwin replaces the injured Brock Lesnar in this fight and he hasn’t competed in nearly a year, due to getting neck surgery. This fight is going to be a brutal slugfest, but it will be Junior Dos Santos earning himself a UFC Heavyweight Title opportunity.
