FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC ON VERSUS IV

By David Tees on 6/27/2011 5:41 PM
Sunday Night’s UFC On Versus IV card featured plenty of excitement, including a candidate for knockout of the year. Also, another heavyweight fight becomes a contender and a welterweight contender is shockingly upset by a local fighter. The evening’s preliminary card also featured top notch action like a farewell to a TUF Champion and the biggest uncalled illegal knee in UFC history.

Round One: Just When You Think You Got Him…

On just a days’ notice, the co-main event between Cheick Kongo and Pat Barry got turned into the evening’s main event. Cheick Kongo wound up taking full advantage of the situation by knocking out Pat Barry in incredible fashion. It was such a tremendous come from behind victory that UFC commentator Joe Rogan called it “the best in UFC history.” Cheick Kongo has now re-established himself in the heavyweight division and Pat Barry learned that he has some work to do.

Next Round For Cheick Kongo: Matt Mitrione, Roy Nelson or a rematch with Travis Browne

Next Round For Pat Barry: Matt Mitrione, Travis Browne or Christian Morecraft

Round Two: Give Him 24 Hours, He Gives You A Victory

One of the most ecstatic people for Nate Marquardt’s sudden medical suspension had to be Charlie Brenneman, who got to be his replacement. Charlie Brenneman, a UFC fighter born in Pennsylvania, shocked the welterweight division when he defeated Rick Story on Sunday Night. Charlie Brenneman used his superior wrestling to outclass and tire Rick Story on route to a unanimous decision victory. Credit must also be given to Rick Story, who could’ve easily pulled out of the fight after his original opponent failed to make PSAC requirements.

Next Round For Charlie Brenneman: Rich Attonito or Matt Brown

Next Round For Rick Story: Anthony Johnson or Daniel Roberts

Round Three: From A Meathead To A Contender

Matt Mitrione has only competed in five professional MMA fights and he is currently undefeated in his MMA career. After a lot of trash talk between both fighters, Matt Mitrione knocked out Christian Morecraft in the second round of their fight. Matt Mitrione showed a lot of composure in the fight, especially after he was taken down by Christian Morecraft. Matt Mitrione now finds himself as a contender in the heavyweight division, but is the pool already too full for him?

Next Round For Matt Mitrione: Pat Barry, Dave Herman or Mirko Cro Cop

Next Round For Christian Morecraft: Aaron Rosa, Joey Beltran or Mike Russow

Round Four: The Most Illegal Knee Ever & A Potential Goodbye

The action on Facebook was fast and furious on Sunday Night, with four of seven fights not going to a decision. However, after a very bad performance in a losing effort to Javier Vazquez, we may have seen the last of Joe Stevenson in the UFC. Also, Charles Oliveira ended the long winning streak of Nik Lentz with a rear naked choke, but it wasn’t the choke that did the damage. Charles Oliveira nailed Nik Lentz with a knee strike while one knee was on the ground and the referee never even acknowledged it. UFC commentator Joe Rogan stated after the fight that the knee strike and the fight as a whole will be going under review.

Next Round For Javier Vazquez: Josh Grispi, George Roop or Chan Sung Jung

Next Round For Joe Stevenson: A UFC Release

Next Round For Charles Oliveira: Sam Stout or Joe Lauzon

Next Round For Nik Lentz: Jeremy Stephens or Yves Edwards

Round Five: A Missing Main Eventer

For those not in the know, Rick Story was originally set to face Nate Marquardt in the main event of UFC On Versus IV. Then on Saturday Night, Nate Marquardt was not medically cleared by the PSAC and then UFC President Dana White released him from the promotion. As of this writing (6/27), no reason has been stated by anybody on why exactly Nate Marquardt was pulled. The sad thing is that the UFC loses a top level fighter and the top level fighter lost the biggest MMA job he could have.

Next Round For Nate Marquardt: Bellator in the United States or DREAM/BAMMA if he goes overseas
