STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 17 TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 7/18/2011 7:30 PM
We are nearing the twentieth edition of Strikeforce Challengers, but the seventeenth edition may prove to be the best one yet. This card will be headlined by rising stars Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker, who are meeting for the third time in Strikeforce. The undercard is spectacular as well with a heavyweight contender fighting and a potential title shot on the line for the women.

A pair of middleweights will kick off the event as Adlan Amagov (7-1-1) goes toe to toe with Ron “The Choir Boy” Stallings (9-3-0). Adlan Amagov has never really fought outside of Russia, but he enters the fight riding a seven fight winning streak. Ron Stallings enters this fight riding a two fight winning streak and he holds a victory over Bellator veteran Herbert Goodman. This fight will be about good striking versus good grappling, but I see Ron Stallings getting the win here.

A potential Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight Title Fight is on the line as Liz “Girl-Rilla” Carmouche (5-1-0) takes on Sarah Kaufman (13-1-0). Liz Carmouche is coming off of a loss in a title fight of her own against current Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight Champion Marloes Coenen. Sarah Kaufman lost the welterweight title to Marloes Coenen at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II< but he since rebounded by defeating Megumi Yabushita. This fight should be nothing should of a great slugfest, but I see Sarah Kaufman getting the victory and a future title shot.

Light heavyweight fighters are set to step into the cage next as Joe Cason (9-1-0) meets up with Ovince St. Preux (10-4-0). Joe Cason enters this fight after achieving the biggest victory of his career, which was a TKO victory over UFC veteran Sean Salmon. Ovince St. Preux has also been on quite a roll with victories over Benji Radach, Ron Humphrey and Jason Day. The winner of this fight should be getting the call to bigger events and that will happen with Ovince St. Preux.

The co-main event is set to take place in the heavyweight division as Lavar “Big” Johnson (15-4-0) faces off with Devin Cole (18-9-1). Lavar Johnson recently suffered his first loss in Strikeforce to Shane Del Rosario at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva, the fight was a heavyweight grand prix reserve bout. Devin Cole will be attempting to end a two fight losing streak, with his most recent loss coming against Strikeforce veteran Daniel Cormier. Like the women’s fight, this one should be a slugfest and I see Lavar Johnson picking up a much needed victory.

The main event of this show is a rubber match in the welterweight division as “Viscous” Bobby Voelker (23-8-0) faces “Relentless” Roger Bowling (9-1-0). Bobby Voelker enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak with victories over Cory Devela and Roger Bowling. This fight will be Roger Bowling fourth in Strikeforce and it will be the third time he has met Bobby Voelker in the promotion. Nothing much has changed between the fighters since the second fight, which is why Bobby Voelker will win the series.
