FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC 133: EVANS VS. ORTIZ II

By David Tees on 8/7/2011 1:27 PM
The action was slow at times and fast at times, but a long awaited rematch finally took place on Saturday Night. After four long years of waiting, Rashad Evans finally got to avenge his lone draw to former champion Tito Ortiz at UFC 74. Also, Vitor Belfort put himself back into title contention and Rory MacDonald moves up the rankings in the welterweight division.

Round One: 1460 Days Is A Long Wait

UFC 74 was an action packed show four years ago that featured Anderson Silva and Nate Marquardt in the main event, plus a bout pitting Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz. After a long wait, Rashad Evans proved he was the better fighter by defeating Tito Ortiz by TKO in the second round. Tito Ortiz had a few moments where he looked like he had victory in hand, but threatened little otherwise. Rashad Evans has now bounced back after a long layoff and can sit back and wait for his UFC Light Heavyweight Title shot.

Next Round For Rashad Evans: A UFC Light Heavyweight Title fight against the Jon Jones/Quinton Jackson winner

Next Round For Tito Ortiz: Lyoto Machida, Antonio Rogerio Nogueiro or Phil Davis

Round Two: A “Phenom”-inal Victory

It took less than two minutes for former middleweight top contender Vitor Belfort to leave Yoshihiro Akiyama flat on his face. Immediately after the victory, Vitor Belfort said that he wanted another shot at UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Yoshihiro Akiyama has now lost three straight fights in the UFC and could be seeing a pink slip in the near future. If Vitor Belfort can pick up a few more victories, a middleweight title shot would not be entirely out of the question.

Next Round For Vitor Belfort: The Chris Leben/Mark Munoz winner

Next Round For Yoshihiro Akiyama: A UFC release

Round Three: The Death Of The Banana Hammock

Two of the most experienced MMA fighters in all of MMA met up on Saturday Night when Dennis Hallman took on Brian Ebersole. The fight was a pretty good one, but most will probably remember it for the blue thong like item Dennis Hallman wore in the fight. The blue thong was so darn terrible that UFC President Dana White said he may ban the thong from further UFC events. Weird clothing aside, Brian Ebersole moved up the rankings after demolishing Dennis Hallman in the first round.

Next Round For Brian Ebersole: Matt Brown, Rory MacDonald or Rick Story

Next Round For Dennis Hallman: Martin Kampmann, Charlie Brenneman or Johny Hendricks

Round Four: The Welterweight Makes His Mark

Rory MacDonald had a rough start in the UFC after suffering a defeat to Carlos Condit, which occurred in the final seconds of the fight. Rory MacDonald got thrown into the deep waters again on Saturday Night when he faced off with Mike Pyle. Unlike the Carlos Condit fight, Rory MacDonald got the win after finishing Mike Pyle with ground and pound. Rory MacDonald must hope Georges St. Pierre drops the title at some point, because he said that he wouldn’t fight his teammate.

Next Round For Rory MacDonald: Brian Ebersole, Rick Story or Josh Koscheck

Next Round For Mike Pyle: Dennis Hallman, Matt Brown or Johny Hendricks

Round Five: The Hammer Was Hammered

Alexander Gustaffson had a long wait to get his momentum back after losing to Phil Davis in 2010, but he finally got it back. On the Spike TV preliminary card fight, Alexander Gustaffson showed improved fighter intelligence by defeating Matt Hamill by TKO in the second round. In an ever growing talent pool in the UFC Light Heavyweight Division, Alexander Gustafsson made a splash of his own. The real question will be what to do with Matt Hamill, who has now dropped two straight fights.

Next Round For Alexander Gustafsson: Stephan Bonnar, Ryan Bader or Luiz Cane

Next Round For Matt Hamill: Cyrille Diabate, Eliot Marshall or Karlos Vermola
