During tonight's wild UFC on FX card, several fighters cemented their positions in the UFC. I'm going to take a look at what should be next for the winners and losers on tonight's card.
Winners:
Nick Denis (11-2): The Canadian made a quick and violent entry into the UFC, dispatching of Joseph Sandoval in merely 22 seconds with elbows. Following this impressive performance, "The Ninja of Love" needs a quick turnaround and another bout on an upcoming preliminary card to make his case for a main card slot. I say give him the colorful Louis Gaudinot.
Daniel Pineda (16-7): Following his quick submission victory over Pat Schilling, I hope to see Pineda take a step-up in competition. I'd love to see how he fairs against featherweight standouts such as Pablo Garza or Nam Phan.
Fabricio Camoes (14-6-1): Camoes finally scored his first victory in three UFC bouts tonight, making quick work of Tom Hayden. I'd like to see Camoes take on the winner of the upcoming Michael Johnson vs Shane Roller bout.
Charlie Brenneman (15-3): Looking superb as usual, I'd like to see Brenneman back in the mix in the welterweight division. Maybe match him up with Jon Fitch or Josh Neer.
Khabib Nurmagomedov (17-0): After a great debut, I'd really like to see him matched up with Tony Ferguson or Ramsey Nijem, but if I had to choose, Ferguson, as it would make for a more exciting fight.
Jorge Rivera (20-9): Retirement. After a long career with its ups and downs, Jorge has chosen to retire. A fine choice for a hell of a fighter.
Pat Barry (7-4): After a devastating knockout of Christian Morecraft, I'd like to see Barry face Gabriel Gonzaga, maybe in Brazil. That fight would guarantee fireworks, and separate the lower and mid-tier heavyweights a little further.
Mike Easton (12-1): "The Hulk" put on a great fight tonight, proving to any doubters that he belonged in the UFC. Easton says he wants to work his way up, but I think he's ready for a scrappy veteran like Yves Jabouin, with the winner being in the mix for a title shot.
Josh Neer (33-10-1): "The Dentist" cemented his place in the welterweight division with his quick submission of Duane Ludwig. Given the timetable and relatively similar placement in the division, let's get Neer vs Brenneman.
Jim Miller (21-3): Right back in to title contention. Give him a rematch with Gray Maynard or a fight with Nate Diaz, or perhaps a match with Anthony Pettis, if he gets by Joe Lauzon.
Losers:
Joseph Sandoval (6-2): Following two quick losses, I would expect Sandoval to be released. Look for the tough fighter to return to Shark Fights and try to bang out a couple of wins and possibly reclaim his title before trying to make a return to the big stage.
Pat Schilling (5-1): Chalk it up to octagon jitters, or just being outclassed by your opponent, Schilling did not look good in suffering the first defeat of his career at the hands of Daniel Pineda. I'd like to see Schilling get another shot in the cage, perhaps as an opponent for a future UFC signee or a current ZUFFA fighter who may be on his way out.
Tom Hayden (8-1): Hayden showed heart in battle the gritty grappler Camoes tonight. Despite the loss, I'd like to see him return and take on the loser of Michael Johnson vs Shane Roller.
Daniel Roberts (12-4): After three straight losses, I can't see "Ninja" remaining on the roster after this. I'd like to see him disappear for awhile and work on his skills, then maybe make a run in Bellator.
Kamal Shalorus (7-2-2): It's hard to imagine Kamal staying relevant in the UFC. It seems likely that he gets another shot in the octagon, but I'd prefer to see him move down to Strikeforce and try to be a contender.
Eric Schafer (12-7-2): "Red" is a very good fighter when he comes to fight. There's no reason he can't remain a gatekeeper in the division. I'd like to see he and Brad Tavares go at it, in a "loser leaves town" match sometime in the summer.
Christian Morecraft (7-3): A solid fighter in his own right, despite the loss, I'd like to see him back and facing "The Bear" Rob Broughton.
Jared Papazian (14-7): Papazian made a statement in his bout with Mike Easton, he belongs in the UFC. Give him the winner of the upcoming Kid Yamamoto vs Vaughan Lee bout.
Duane Ludwig (21-12): Ludwig should never be counted out, but maybe needs some lesser competition to get back on track. Matt Brown or Chris Cope should suffice.
