LOOKING AT THE UFC UNDISPUTED 3 DEMO

(Note: I am taking a look at the Playstation 3 version of the demo, but it was released on the X-Box 360 as well.)

After a yearlong layoff, the UFC Undisputed series is set to return on February 14th and the long anticipated demo of the game was released this past Tuesday. This demo features four different fighters and two different game modes, which brings back an MMA classic. The fighters in this game are current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones, current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, light heavyweight Quinton Jackson and middleweight Wanderlei Silva.

The two game modes in the demo (and in the full game release) are UFC mode and PRIDE mode, both feature one round fights. UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones battles UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva in UFC mode, which is essentially the same kind of gameplay we have experienced in the two previous versions of the game. Wanderlei Silva and Quinton Jackson duke it out in PRIDE mode, which could be the show stealer in both the demo and full video game. PRIDE mode features the authentic ring entrances, ring and even commentary team from the glory days of PRIDE. Also, the legendary head stomps and soccer kicks are available in the game and look as brutal as they did in the old days.

The gameplay is similar to the last couple of incarnations, with a few notable exceptions for novices of MMA video games. The major change comes in the ground transitions, which features both a veteran and amateur control setting. The veteran control scheme is the same as last year’s game, with very little or no changes being made at all. The amateur control scheme is simplified in that a person only has to hit up or down on the right analog stick to perform a minor or major transition. While these changes are not going to completely alter gameplay, they are a welcome enhancement to the game.

The lone downside of the UFC Undisputed 3 demo is that both UFC mode and PRIDE Mode have been altered to one round fights. In the previous two demos, the fights were the standard three rounds, which was the equivalent on a non-title UFC fight. While this is a bad decision by the game maker, I guess you cannot really fault them for not giving too much away before the games release.

In the end, the UFC Undisputed 3 demo is a great look into what looks to be another great release in the UFC video game series.

UFC Undisputed 3 will be released on both Playstation 3 & X-Box 360 on February 14th, 2012.

You can pre-order the game at the PWInsider Store for only $59.99
