FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC 143: DIAZ VS. CONDIT

By David Tees on 2/7/2012 8:36 PM

A new UFC Interim Welterweight Champion was crowned this past Saturday Night, along with the next challenger to the UFC Welterweight Title. Also, a former UFC star returned to the company in an excellent manner and there may be a new contender to the UFC Bantamweight Title. If that wasn’t enough, a fighter made his UFC debut in exciting fashion and somebody’s nuts got kicked in…twice!!!

Round One: The New UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Is…

Carlos Condit, who outpointed Nick Diaz in a five round war to win the fight and the gold in a controversial split decision. The judge’s decision even prompted the loser, Nick Diaz, to announce his retirement from the sport directly after the fight. Carlos Condit now gets to wait for an ailing Georges St. Pierre to recover from his knee injury, as a clash for the gold is expected before the end of the year. No matter who won the fight, this was going to be a decision that is going to be talked about by the MMA community for years to come.

Next Round For Carlos Condit: UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre

Next Round For Nick Diaz: Retirement, according to the fighter himself

Round Two: A New & Improved Fabricio Werdum Returns To The UFC

To be honest, I did not think that Fabricio Werdum could out strike any heavyweight on the UFC roster, but my mind was quickly changed after Saturday Night. Fabricio Werdum put on a knee striking clinic that looked eerily similar to the one put on by Anderson Silva during his two fights with Rich Franklin. Roy Nelson, while remaining in the fight and taking an incredibly terrible beating, has a cloudy future in the UFC Heavyweight Division. Fabricio Werdum not finds himself at the top of the heap in the current crop of the UFC’s heavyweight division.

Next Round For Fabricio Werdum: Cain Velasquez, Pat Barry or Frank Mir

Next Round For Roy Nelson: Mike Russow or the Dave Herman/Stefan Struve winner

Round Three: Give This Man A Title Shot

There can be no doubt that after thoroughly dominating Scott Jorgensen at UFC 143 that Renan Barao is next in line for a UFC Bantamweight Title shot. Renan Barao dominated the entire fifteen minutes of the fight with Scott Jorgensen, who is also a title contender in his own right. The only thing keeping Renan Barao from a title shot is that he will have a long wait because champion Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber are coaching the next season of the UFC Ultimate Fighter. It will be interesting to see if Renan Barao takes another fight or if he waits to see who comes out on top in the battle of the coaches.

Next Round For Renan Barao: The Dominick Cruz/Urijah Faber winner

Next Round For Scott Jorgensen: The Dominick Cruz/Urijah Faber loser

Round Four: “Bruce Leroy” Targets The Testicles

It’s time for a little toilet humor for round four as we look into the two accidental low blows delivered by Alex Caceres to Edwin Figueroa this past Saturday Night. For those who did not see the fight on FX, Alex Caceres nailed Edwin Figueroa with two kicks to the testicles, once in round one and once in round two. After the second low blow was delivered, referee Herb Dean took two points away from Alex Caceres, instead of the traditional one point. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, those two points were what decided the fight and gave Edwin Figueroa the victory.

Next Round For Edwin Figueroa: Mike Easton, Johnny Bedford and Jeff Curran

Next Round For Alex Caceres: John Albert, Nick Denis and Josh Ferguson

Round Five: An Awesome UFC Debut With An Awesome Head Kick

Not much was expected on the first fight of the card when welterweight fighters Steven Thompson and Dan Stittgen competed. However, everybody who caught the fight live or on Facebook saw what could be one of the best knockouts of the year. For those who missed it, Stephen Thompson landed a brutal head kick knockout to Dan Stittgen, who never even saw it coming. The thing about the knockout is that it will instantly boost Stephen Thompson up the card when it comes to future opponents.

Next Round For Stephen Thompson: Papi Abedi, Matt Brown or Charlie Brenneman

Next Round For Dan Stittgen: A UFC release
