There were three major MMA events this past Friday and Saturday Night, but it all kicked off with an exciting Friday Night UFC event. The event featured one heck of a main event comeback and plenty of controversy in the flyweight tournament opening round. Plus, a UFC ultimate Fighter Champion falls and several Australian fighters have a good showing in the preliminary card.
Round One: The Hitman Makes A Comeback
If you had only watched the first two and a half rounds of the Martin Kampmann/Thiago Alves, you would assume that Alves had walked away the winner. However, one ill-advised takedown and a guillotine choke later, Martin Kampmann was your winner. Thiago Alves played a perfect game for fourteen minutes of the fight, but it only took a split second of bad choices to erase all the effort. Martin Kampmann, who could be riding a five fight winning streak if it weren’t for two disputed decision losses, now finds himself back at the top of the division.
Next Round For Martin Kampmann: Jake Ellenberger or the Josh Koscheck/Johny Hendricks winner
Next Round For Thiago Alves: A rubber match with Jon Fitch or Diego Sanchez
Round Two: The Wrong Kind Of Controversy
There is nothing wrong with a little controversy every once in a while, but the wrong kind of controversy can spell doom for some. In what looked like a clear decision victory for Ian McCall turned out to be anything but as Demetrious Johnson was given the fight according to the judges. However, it was revealed after the fight that the commission added the scores wrong and the fight should have been a tie, thus ushering in the bonus fourth round. Now the two fighters must take the time to heal and fight once more in a semi-final fight and make the other semi-final wait even longer to fight for the title.
Next Round For Ian McCall: Demetrious Johnson

Round Three: Advancing To The Finals Of The Flyweight Tournament Is…
Joseph Benavidez, who clobbered opponent Yasuhiro Urushitani with strikes in the second round to earn a TKO victory and a future flyweight title opportunity. Many within the MMA community felt that the division was created in a sense for Benavidez, who has been competing above his natural weight class for a long time now. Sadly, the wait will have to be a lot long for Benavidez, who must wait for the obligatory Demetrious Johnson/Ian McCall rematch. The only positive is that the long wait will give Joseph Benavidez a lot of time to rest before fighter for the title.
Next Round For Joseph Benavidez: The Demetrious Johnson/Ian McCall winner
Next Round For Yasuhiro Urushitani: The Demetrious Johnson/Ian McCall loser
Round Four: Court Is Out Of Session
Everybody has to fall once and a while and that moment has come for UFC Ultimate Fighter Champion Court McGee, who dropped a decision to Constantinos Philippou on Friday Night. This loss should not put McGee to far back in the rankings as Philippou is a middleweight fighter on the rise. The counter striking of Philippou proved to be the key factor in the fight as Court had no answer for it at all. Constantinos Philippou is a very dangerous striker, assuming his ground game can develop as well, could find himself in title contention one day.
Next Round For Constantinos Philippou: Tim Boetsch or the Brian Stann/Alessio Sakara winner
Next Round For Court McGee: Yushin Okami, Chris Weidman or Kyle Noke
Round Five: Not Bad Australia
Whenever the UFC travels outside of North America, I always find it interesting to see how each particular countries fighters perform. In the case of the Australian fighters, the trio of Kyle Noke, Anthony Perosh and James Te Huna saw action. When it was all said and done, Anthony Perosh and James Te Huna all saw victory, while Kyle Noke was upset. Australia is quickly becoming a region of top ranked MMA fighters and a few more were added to the list of Friday Night.
Next Round For Anthony Perosh: Fabio Maldonado, Stanislav Nedkov or Nick Penner
Next Round For James Te Huna: Vladimir Matyushenko, Igor Pokrajac or Jason Brilz
Next Round For Kyle Noke: A UFC release
