GOALS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR THE 4/30 RAW

By Revin Samuel on 5/1/2012 4:18 PM

RAW - 30/04/2012
What needs to be accomplished on this week’s Raw?
•Emphasize the importance of what happened on last night’s Extreme Rules pay per view while beginning the hype for Over the Limit, which is only three weeks away!
•WWE made the bonehead decision of putting John Cena over Brock Lesnar clean. It was a great match, but I don’t think it was good long term thinking, which of course is always a weakness of WWE. WWE must attempt to recreate the aura around Brock and that means emphasizing the beating he gave to John Cena and pointing that Brock had the match won
•What’s next for CM Punk? I assume this Jericho storyline has come to a close so I’m interested to see the next chapter for the WWE Champion
Show Breakdown

  1.

  1. I’m watching this opening video package and while it’s a good one, it’s just the wrong strategy. WWE is so determined to get John Cena cheered and say against all odds Cena prevailed. It’s not like Cena has been down on his luck for too long. WWE is trying to tell the story of Cena overcoming the odds and being on a losing skid yet they skipped about five chapters in the process. Once again Vinny Mac showcasing that his storytelling skills are subpar sometimes.

  1.

  1. Also the stills that WWE showed do not show that Cena got dominated, but that it was an even match that Cena won from my perspective especially the last photo which shows Cena standing tall while Brock is down.

  1.

  1. I  do like that the opening intro package had the Monday Night Raw starring Brock Lesnar theme going thus staying consistent with the contract demands from last week.

  1.

  1. I like that Laurinaitis is emphasizing that Brock destroyed Cena, but it doesn’t mean as much coming from a heel GM character.

  1.

  1. John Laurinaitis facial expressions are just tremendous.

  1.

  1. Fine opening segment. I guess they are building to Brock-Hunter at some point. Based on past history I don’t expect Hunter to be as giving as John Cena so I’m not sure if this program is good for Brock even if he goes over. I guess I should wait and see how it plays out before passing judgement.

  1.

  1. Beat the clock challenge is a terrible concept, because the matches are less than five minutes long and this is to determine the number one contender to the WWE title. Just asinine.

  1.

  1. Miz loses to Santino on the pre show yesterday and now both guys are in contention for the WWE title. I hate to be repetitive, but this is the type of stuff that just kills any credibility WWE has with a fan base that wants to believe in the product.

  1.

  1. Good to see Layla back, she needs to get new theme music though.

  1.

  1. I have no issue with WWE using Layla to get the title off the Bellas, but they had a story they were telling from one year ago with the Bella Twins and Kharma and if they dropped it because word leaked on the Internet that’s just mindboggling.

  1.

  1. Should Chris Jericho even be in the beat the clock competition after losing twice to CM Punk?

  1.

  1. Jericho needed a win even if it was by count out. Hopefully that time doesn’t stand.

  1.

  1. Alright well it looks like Miz still has the time to beat. I’m interested to see what’s next for Mr. Jericho.

  1.

  1. Here comes Brodus and no Hornswoggle! Thank that Chicago crowd because it looks like WWE realized that Hornswoggle was not a good addition to that group!

  1.

  1. WWE still isn’t mentioning that Brock had Cena pinned, but they are saying Cena got dominated, which I guess is the best we can expect from them. I sometimes wonder if the past grudge against Brock means more to Vince than money.

  1.

  1. It seems like it’s very important for WWE to mention how Triple H made his own comeback. This is why a feud with Triple H isn’t good for Brock. Triple H is just too insecure of a performer leading up to the match even if he does the right thing in the end.

  1.

  1. Eve looking super hot with the glasses. Again I stress she wouldn’t have been my first choice for this role, but she appears to be doing well with it.

  1.

  1. I wouldn’t mind if they went to Randy-Punk next, that would definitely be an intriguing match as two babyfaces going for the title. Randy needs to get away from Kane for sure. BTW mad props to Orton for getting a hell of a match out of Kane at Extreme Rules.

  1.

  1. Pretty solid match between Randy and Jack Swagger. I remember a time Swagger beat Randy relatively clean in an Extreme Rules match now Randy can get it done in a little over 4 minutes. Poor Jack, but better they feed Randy, Jack Swagger than Dolph Ziggler.

  1.

  1. So Big Show and Khali beat Primo and Epico in a non title match. Santino and Ryder do it as well and it’s Truth and Kofi that get the title shot. Is this the result of having writers who don’t understand the sports side of this or a crazy boss who constantly changes his mind? Probably a bit of both.

  1.

  1. Rosa looking hot as always.

  1.

  1. So instead of having Kharma take out the Bellas and have a one year story come full circle. WWE fires Bella Twins in an online vignette. This company...

  1.

  1. So Truth and Kofi are the new tag champs? I guess it makes sense with the burial of Primo and Epico lately. Hopefully Rosa still has a role somewhere.

  1.

  1. So AW is going to bring Primo and Epico back to the promise land? I highly doubt that one, but it’s a storyline.

  1.

  1. I like that they keep showing the guy who has the lead in the beat the clock watching from the back.

  1.

  1. Kane and Khali, gross.

  1.

  1. I thought John Cena was going on vacation? That would never happen, let’s be honest here. Vince doesn’t understand the concept of freshening talents up by giving them time off.

  1.

  1. How come those stage hands backstage aren’t wearing name tags? WWE not staying consistent with their storytelling, anyone else surprised?

  1.

  1. Jerry Lawler is in a beat the clock challenge for the WWE Title? This company...

  1.

  1. Well Punk-Bryan is a pleasant surprise and should be a great match for Over the Limit.

  1.

  1. At least they put Cena in a sling.

  1.

  1. Cena doing comedy is the absolute worst although the Zeus line was cute.

  1. Cena vs Laurinaitis at Over the Limit? We put smiles on people’s faces. This is WWE’s only chance to get John Cena unanimously cheered and I’m sure that’s part of the reason they are doing it.

What this show accomplished?
The Good
•Punk-Bryan announced for Over the Limit. This at least guarantees us a good wrestling match at Over the Limit
•Brodus Clay loses Hornswoggle
•Brock-Triple H segment. As a standalone segment it was pretty damn good and John Laurinaitis was the star of it
•Eve. She is playing the role well, but I miss Otunga and hope he returns soon!
•Orton-Swagger, very good match in a short time frame. Orton back to back good nights of in ring action!
The Bad
•Where to begin? Cena-Laurinaitis. I just can’t stand the way WWE handles the push and character of John Cena and the heel GM storyline is so played out. This is the type of storyline that continues to happen in WWE, because Raw is written by writers and the heel GM storyline is the best way for writers to be able to use their talents to write scripted verbiage!
•Primo and Epico lose the tag titles to Truth and Kofi? Shouldn’t they have lost the titles to the two other teams who beat them first? Santino and Ryder or Khali and Show? Translation show is written on the fly
•Bella Twins not taken out by Kharma. I’m sorry this is just unacceptable if it was because people saw it coming. I love Layla, she is my favorite diva, but if Kharma is cleared to return and they didn’t have her destroy the Bellas after last year’s promise it’s just ridiculous
•Beat the clock challenge. It’s a dumb concept especially when you have guys involved who shouldn’t be such as Santino, Jerry Lawler, Miz and even Chris Jericho who had lost twice to CM Punk
•WWE coming off too family oriented? I had a friend called me who is a casual fan and he was just so turned off by the Cena make a wish promotion followed up with Brodus dancing with kids and I agree partially. It’s not that this type of stuff bothers me, but you need to space it out better. If you want to promote Cena and Make a Wish do it early and then do Brodus and the kids late in the show. It’s very clear that this product is run by a Grandfather sometimes
•Cena going on vacation, but then back again. Where have we seen this before? Just terrible on the fly writing.
Overall Thoughts
•Average Raw. I complained alot, but they setup two matches for Extreme Rules and as we know my main priority is pay per view hype. They have a ton of stuff they need to adjust though and it frustrates me because they are easy fixes such as Cena doing comedy, wrestlers being put in positions of credibility after being treated like jobbers, the handling of Brock-Cena, the continued push of the heel GM, etc
What needs to be accomplished on next week’s show?
Cena selling the Brock beating. I hope this sustains for more than one week
•Chris Jericho. I’m really intrigued to see what Jericho’s next program will be, because we know he’ll be careful and take pride in what he’s doing
•Punk and Bryan. Normally I’d be fearing promo exchanges written by WWE Creative, but I’m interested in the hype this match gets going forward towards Over the Limit
•John Laurinaitis. He plays the role well, the facial expressions are great, but I don’t need him book ending the every show
