For the first time since UFC Ultimate Fight Night II, the UFC ran an event on a Tuesday Night and it featured one of the best fights of the year. Chan Sung Jung and Dustin Poirier put on a battle that will easily be remembered as one of the best of 2012. Also, a lightweight contender got back on the winning track and a fighter got a major victory on his birthday.
Round One: You Cannot Kill A Zombie
One important lesson was learned by all MMA fans on Tuesday Night and that lesson was that nobody can kill a zombie. Chan Sung Jung has been unbelievable thus far since debuting in the UFC and he can now add a victory over Dustin Poirier to the list. Chan Sung Jung can now take an extended break as he now has to wait to see how the upcoming Jose Aldo/Erik Koch fight plays out. Dustin Poirier, submission loss aside, is still a contender in the division, but has some holes in his game that needs to be filled.
Next Round For Chan Sung Jung: The Jose Aldo/Erik Koch winner
Next Round For Dustin Poirier: The Hatsu Hioki/Ricardo Lamas loser
Round Two: The Cowboy Rides Again
In a much needed victory following the Nate Diaz loss, Donald Cerrone returned to form by blasting Jeremy Stephens for three rounds. Donald Cerrone used his range, as well as an excellent array of leg kicks to keep his opponent stifled throughout the fight. Jeremy Stephens did his best to get on the inside of Donald Cerrone, but there was just too much reach for him to overcome. Donald Cerrone has now returned to the top of the division, but it’s the most stacked division in the UFC right now.
Next Round For Donald Cerrone: Jim Miller, Anthony Pettis or the Frankie Edgar/Ben Henderson loser
Next Round For Jeremy Stephens: Rafeal Dos Anjos or the Joe Lauzon/Terry Etim winner
Round Three: A Real Slugfest
At one point in time, Igor Pokrajac was set to be the co-main event of UFC On Fuel TV II, but injuries to his opponent forced a change is fights for him. However, in the end, Igor Pokrajac ended up in a fight that will be remembered more than what he would have had in the lost co-main event. Fabio Maldonado put on a fantastic display of striking skills in a losing effort, via decision, to Igor Pokrajac. Igor Pokrajac now finds himself moving up in the light heavyweight division, while Fabio Maldonado finds himself somewhere in the middle.
Next Round For Igor Pokrajac: Kyle Kingsbury, Stephan Bonnar or Anthony Perosh
Next Round For Fabio Maldonado: Cyrille Diabate, Tom DeBlass or Stanislav Nedkov
Round Four: Hey Tom Lawlor, It’s Your Birthday!!!
There can maybe be no bigger gift for a fighter than to get a spectacular knockout victory on his birthday and that is exactly what happened to Tom Lawlor on Tuesday Night. Early into the opening round of his first fight with Jason MacDonald, Tom Lawlor cracked him with a left hook that instantly dropped the fighter and left him out cold. This was a much needed victory for Tom Lawlor, who was starting to find himself near the bottom of the middleweight division. Many folks assumed that Jason MacDonald would retire after the fighter, but those rumors have already been shot down.
Next Round For Tom Lawlor: Chris Leben, Yushin Okami or Ed Herman
Next Round For Jason MacDonald: A UFC release
Round Five: The Prince Has Been Dethroned
Kamal Shalorus had all the momentum in the world when he came to the UFC after competing in the WEC, but that momentum is dead now. In the first round of their fight, Rafael Dos Anjos dropped Kamal Shalorus with a head kick before submitting him with the rear naked choke. Rafael Dos Anjos always finds a way to keep himself in contention in the division, but the same could not be said for his opponent. While he was amazing in the WEC, Kamal Shalorus seems to be a shell of his former self while competing on the big stage.
Next Round For Rafael Dos Anjos: Jeremy Stephens, Mark Bocek or Mac Danzig
Next Round For Kamal Shalorus: A UFC release
