After several delays and other issues, the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix will come to a close on Saturday Night. However, before the tournament can conclude, there is a five fight preliminary card that will be taking place first. This particular preliminary card features a big lightweight division fight and a few top rated light heavyweights.
Kicking off the action is a lightweight division fight as Bobby “King†Green (17-5-0) competes against James “Intensity†Terry (11-4-0). Bobby green has won two of three in Strikeforce competition, last defeating James Reese at Strikeforce Challengers 20. James Terry has won six of nine thus far in Strikeforce, most notably defeating Zak Bucia in a two fight series. This will be an excellent fight to kick off the event, but it will be Bobby Green pulling out the big victory.
Welterweight fighters will be featured next as Quinn Mulhern (17-2-0) is in action against Yuri Villefort (6-0-0). Quinn Mulhern enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak, but this will be his first MMA fight of 2012. Yuri Villefort is an undefeated fighter who will be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, but he has not competed since 2010. This fight will easily be the biggest test of Yuri Villefort’s career, but it will be a test that the fighter passes.
We move to the light heavyweight division for the next fight as Derrick “Caveman†Mehmen (12-4-0) battles Gian Villante (9-3-0). Derrick Mehmen is coming off the biggest fight of his career, a loss to UFC veteran Rodney Wallace at WMMA 1. Gian Villante has won two of four in Strikeforce, but he does enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak. Strikeforce in low of light heavyweight contenders right now, but it will be Gian Villante getting the win and becoming a contender in the promotion.
Up next is another light heavyweight division fight as Carlos Augusto “Guto Inocente†Filho (5-0-0) faces Virgil “Rezdog†Zwicker (10-2-0). Carlos Augusto Fulho will be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, as he has previously competed in Brazil. Virgil Zwicker has split both of his fights in Strikeforce, defeating Brett Albee and suffering a defeat to Lavar Johnson. This fight is definitely one worth checking out, but it will be Carlos Augusto Filho remaining undefeated in the end.
Headlining this portion of the card is a lightweight division contest as Gesias “JZ†Cavalcante (16-4-0) takes on Isaac Vallie-Flagg (12-3-0). Gesias Cavalcante has had an odd run ion Strikeforce with a victory over Bobby Green, a loss to Josh Thomson and a draw with Justin Wilcox. Isaac Vallie-Flagg is currently in Strikeforce competition, defeating Brian Melancon at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum. The winner of this fight could be closer to a title shot than one would think and it will be Gesias Cavalcante.
