UFC 146: DOS SANTOS VS. MIR PAY-PER-VIEW CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 5/25/2012 8:55 PM

For the first time ever in UFC history, a pay-per-view card will be compiled with nothing other than heavyweight fights. The card will be headlined with a title defense by Junior Dos Santos against a worthy challenger in Frank Mir. Also, Cain Velasquez returns for the first time since losing his title and an undefeated Strikeforce heavyweight makes his UFC debut.

Kicking off the action is a heavyweight division clash as Lavar “Big” Johnson (17-5-0) is in action against Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve (23-5-0). Lavar Johnson is a late replacement for Mark hunt, who was pulled from the fight after suffering a knee injury. Stefan Struve enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak, with the victories coming over Dave Herman and Pat Barry. Lavar Johnson is going to turn this fight into a slugfest and that strategy is what will get him the victory here.

More heavyweight competition is up next as Shane Del Rosario (10-0-0) competes against Stipe Miocic (8-0-0). Shane Del Rosario comes to the UFC from Strikeforce and has not competed in over a year due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Stipe Miocic is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated both Joey Beltran and Phillip De Fries. Somebodies undefeated streak is coming to an end in this one, but it will be Shane Del Rosario remaining undefeated in the end.

Another heavyweight contest is next as Dave Herman (21-3-0) takes on Roy “Big Country” Nelson (16-7-0). Dave Herman has split his two fights thus far in the UFC, defeating John Olav Einemo and suffering a defeat to Stefan Struve. Roy Nelson has only won one of his last four in the UFC, with that lone victory coming over Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 137. This is essentially a must win fight for Roy Nelson and he will be getting that victory to keep his job safe.

Up next is a heavyweight division fight as Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (16-3-0) battles Cain Velasquez (9-1-0). Antonio Silva is coming off of a run in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, where he made it to the tournament semi-finals. Cain Velasquez is competing for the first time since losing the UFC Heavyweight Title to Junior Dos Santos at UFC On Fox I. This fight could be called the top contenders battle and it will be Cain Velasquez earning the possible title shot.

Headlining this card is a UFC Heavyweight Title fight as champion Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (14-1-0) faces Frank Mir (16-5-0). Junior Dos Santos won the UFC Heavyweight Title at UFC On Fox I when he defeated Cain Velasquez by TKO. Frank Mir enters the fight riding a three fight winning streak, which includes a victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140. This fight could be more exciting than the originally scheduled fight and there will be a new champion in Frank Mir.
