The historic first season of the UFC Ultimate Fighter Live has come to a conclusion and Mike Chiesa became the first champion. A new welterweight top contender was crowned in the main event and a past UFC Ultimate Fighter champion went down. Also, a fighter submitted without being submitted and a head kick rocked the world of the Ultimate Fighting Championships.
Round One: The Hitman Nails His Target
One thing was for certain on Friday Night, whoever won the main event between Martin Kampmann and Jake Ellenberger would be considered a top contender to the UFC Welterweight Title. When it was all said and done, Martin Kampmann knocked out Jake Ellenberger with several knee strikes to become a top contender. Jake Ellenberger had an opportunity to finish off Martin Kampmann in the first round, but he gassed out before doing so. Martin Kampmann must now decide if he wants to wait for the title situation to clear out before fighting again.
Next Round For Martin Kampmann: Johny Hendricks
Next Round For Jake Ellenberger: Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck or Thiago Alves
Round Two: An Inspirational Victory
Very few people faced the challenge that Mike Chiesa faced during the inaugural season of the UFC Ultimate Fighter Live. For those not in the know, during the inaugural episode of the season, Mike Chiesa’s father passed away. Mike Chiesa briefly left the house to attend his father’s funeral, then he returned with a vengeance shortly thereafter. Mike Chiesa battled all the way to the tournament finals and then he won the whole thing after submitting Al Iaquinta in the finals.
Next Round For Mike Chiesa: Mitch Clarke, John Cholish or Tim Means
Next Round For Al Iaquinta: Joe Proctor, Justin Lawrence or Daron Cruickshank
Round Three: A TUF Champion Goes Down
While Mike Chiesa enjoyed the success of the UFC Ultimate Fighter Live, past UFC Ultimate Fighter champion Jonathan Brookins had a different experience on Friday Night. Despite a decent exchanging of strikes with Charles Oliveira, Jonathan Brookins went down to submission after getting caught with a guillotine choke. This submission lost marked the first one for Jonathan Brookins in his professional MMA career, which also included some time in the WEC. Charles Oliveira is currently undefeated as a featherweight in the UFC and he may not be that far off from a title opportunity.
Next Round For Charles Oliveira: Mark Hominick, Dustin Poirier or Leonard Garcia
Next Round For Jonathan Brookins: Maximo Blanco, Dennis Bermudez or Mike Brown
Round Four: Hello Head Kick KO!
Justin Lawrence may not have made it all the way to the UFC ultimate Fighter Live Finale, but he may have made the biggest impact. Early in the third round against John Cofer, Justin Lawrence nailed a head kick that knocked his foe out cold. When the non-finalists of the UFC Ultimate Fighter Finale have to fight to stay in the promotion, getting the victory the way Justin Lawrence did will get you more opportunities. While it is pretty obvious that Justin Lawrence will get more shots in the UFC, one must wonder if John Cofer will get another one as well.
Next Round For Justin Lawrence: Paul Taylor, Tim Means or Marcus LeVesseur
Next Round For John Cofer: A UFC Release
Round Five: The Tap Out That Wasn’t
There was only a single fight that was streamed on Facebook on Friday Night, but it may have been the most controversial. Late in the first round, Erik Perez caught John Albert in an arm bar and referee Kim Winslow stopped the fight after a brief struggle. Upon review of the replay, it was clear that John Albert neither tapped or was injured severely enough to force an early stoppage. John Albert walked away quite the angry fighter and honestly speaking, he has every right to be so in this situation.
Next Round For Erik Perez: Johnny Bedford, Nick Denis or Roland Delorme
Next Round For John Albert: Reuben Duran, Josh Ferguson or Mitch Gagnon
