The controversy is now over and we finally have a finalist to fight Joseph Benavidez for the UFC Flyweight Championship. Also, the welterweight division got a bright new star and another veteran re-established himself in the UFC. If that was not enough, a former WEC champion returned to form and a fighter got a second chance to make his UFC debut.
Round One: Mighty Mouse Advances
The first fight between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall will go down as one of the most controversial fights in UFC history. A few months and a rematch later, the man known as “Mighty Mouse†now moves onto the tournament final and a battle with Joseph Benavidez. Demetrious Johnson did everything right like he did in the first fight, the difference was that Ian McCall seemed a little off this time around. Despite the loss, Ian McCall will still be a top contender for the gold once an actual champion is crowned later this year.
Next Round For Demetrious Johnson: Joseph Benavidez
Next Round For Ian McCall: Yasuhiro Urushitani
Round Two: The Spaniard Goes Down
Charlie Brenneman once looked like the future of the welterweight division, but there is another fighter taking that role after Friday Night. Erick Silva showed his excellent striking skills and a great ground game upon submitting his opponent in the semi-main event. Erick Silva had something to prove in this fight, following the controversial disqualification loss to Carlo Prater at UFC 142. Charlie Brenneman can still become a force in the welterweight division, but he needs to improve his striking first.
Next Round For Erick Silva: Thiago Alves, Jake Ellenberger or Mike Pierce
Next Round For Charlie Brenneman: Matt Brown, Papy Abedi or Che Mills
Round Three: The Dentist Sinks In The Quicksand
Two longtime MMA veterans stepped into the cage on Friday Night needing a victory to propel themselves in the UFC rankings, only one walked away achieving that goal. The fighter achieving that goal was Mike Pyle, who got a one punch knockout over Josh Neer in the first round. Mike Pyle acted like that was his plan throughout the fight, but those watching could tell he was in trouble before connecting with the right. Josh Neer will definitely be back in the UFC, but one must think that his chances of getting call backs are getting slimmer by the day.
Next Round For Mike Pyle: Thiago Alves, Charlie Brenneman or Dan Hardy
Next Round For Josh Neer: Papy Abedi, Matthew Riddle or Ricardo Funch
Round Four: A Champion Is Back In Form
Eddie Wineland was easily a single loss away from being released from the UFC, but his prospects for the future changed after Friday Night. Eddie Wineland ended up clobbering Scott Jorgensen with a right hook and the fight was instantly over, along with a career being saved. With a division getting quickly filled up with more contenders, Eddie Wineland may have gotten the win at the right time. Scott Jorgensen can still be a threat in the UFC, but dropping to the flyweight division may be a good idea right now.
Next Round For Eddie Wineland: Miguel Torres, Norifumi Yamamoto or Brian Bowles
Next Round For Scott Jorgensen: Jeff Hougland, Reuben Duran or Nick Dennis
Round Five: A Second Chance At A First Impression
Buddy Roberts was originally set to make his UFC debut at UFC On Fuel TV I, but an unexpected event wound up changing his course of history. His opponent for that night, Sean Loeffler, wound up badly injuring his ankle while warming up backstage and the fight was called off. Fast forward nearly four months later to UFC On FX III, Buddy Roberts finally got to make his UFC debut with a victory over Caio Magalhaes. All that the victory proves for Buddy Roberts is that there are opportunities to make a second impression.
Next Round For Buddy Roberts: Sean Loeffler, Chris Camozzi or Nick Ring
Next Round For Caio Magalhaes: Clifford Starks, Magnus Cedenblad or Michael Kuiper
