FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC ON FX IV

By David Tees on 6/25/2012 7:22 PM

The UFC kick started a two event weekend with an event that featured an overall great card with a truly odd main event. The trilogy between Sam Stout and Spencer Fisher came to an end, plus a welterweight fighter remained undefeated in the UFC. Also, a UFC Ultimate Fighter winner went down to defeat and a risk was not worth the reward for a featherweight contender.

Round One: The Carpenter Is Out Of His Mind

When the UFC On FX IV main event was announced as Clay Guida versus Gray Maynard, most people thought a potential fight of the year candidate would be before us. However, a crazy Greg Jackson inspired game plan later and all we got was Clay Guida doing a dance around the octagon for twenty five minutes. Gray Maynard did his best to get a fight out of his dancing foe, but the fight provided very few highlights in the end. What was even more shocking from the main event fight is that Clay Guida actually thought that he won the fight.

Next Round For Gray Maynard: Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone or Sam Stout

Next Round For Clay Guida: Joe Lauzon, Melvin Guillard or Danny Castillo

Round Two: The Trilogy Is Complete

Whether it was necessary or not, the trilogy between Sam stout and Spencer Fisher came to an awesome conclusion on Friday Night. This fight played out just like the last two, with the exception of the vastly improved wrestling of Sam Stout. Besides the excellent striking exchanges between the two fighters, it was the previously mentioned wrestling of Sam Stout that gave him the nod. Sadly, Spencer Fisher announced his plans to retire after the fight, which ends a great career in mixed martial arts.

Next Round For Sam Stout: Gray Maynard, Melvin Guillard or Mac Danzig

Next Round For Spencer Fisher: Retirement

Round Three: The “Hair-row” Reigns Supreme

In the last two years there has been an unlikely contender rising in the welterweight division and that contender is Brian Ebersole. Despite a scare in the first round from TJ Waldburger, Brian Ebersole survived to earn a decision victory. Brian Ebersole now finds himself in a spot that puts him in contendership for the UFC Welterweight Title. TJ Waldburger still has a bright future in the division, but he has to have other tools that a great ground game to move up.

Next Round For Brian Ebersole: Charlie Brenneman, Matt Brown or Dan Miller

Next Round For TJ Waldburger: Papy Abedi, Brock Jardine or Claude Patrick

Round Four: A TUF Champion Goes Down

Ross Pearson’s run as a featherweight in the UFC has not been to thrilling, especially after Friday Night’s battle with Cub Swanson. In the second round of their fight, Cub Swanson caught Ross Pearson with a brutal three fight combination that put the fighter down for the count. Cub Swanson is seemingly hitting his prime right now, which could spell trouble for the UFC Featherweight Division. Ross Pearson better start finding his footing in the division, because he may be on his way to becoming to next TUF Champion released by the UFC.

Next Round For Cub Swanson: Ricardo Lamas, Hatsu Hioki or Chan Sung Jung

Next Round For Ross Pearson: Diego Brandao, Diego Nunes or Mike Brown

Round Five: High Risk…No Reward

It was common knowledge that Hatsu Hioki was taking a huge risk when he passed up a UFC featherweight Title shot to fight Ricardo Lamas on Friday Night. The risk was not worth the reward in the end for Hatsu Hioki, who ended up losing the fight via decision to Ricardo Lamas. Ricardo Lamas used superior wrestling skills and a lot of decent striking to get himself the unanimous decision. It will be interesting to see how many fights Hatsu Hioki will need to win in order to get back into title contention.

Next Round For Ricardo Lamas: Cub Swanson, Chan Sung Jung or Dennis Siver

Next Round For Hatsu Hioki: Chad Mendes, Diego Nunes or Dustin Poirier
