UFC 149 PAY-PER-VIEW CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 7/20/2012 3:55 PM

Despite the severely bad injury bug that obliterated the majority of the card, the UFC 149 pay-per-view will continue on with a title at stake. Urijah Faber and Renan Barao are set to battle with the UFC Interim Bantamweight Title on the line. Also, a former Bellator Middleweight Champion makes his UFC debut and a pair of heavyweights are going to collide.

Kicking off the action is a welterweight division fight as Chris “The Menace” Clements (11-4-0) does battle with Matt “Deep Waters” Riddle (6-3-0). Chris Clements is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Keith Wisniewski at UFC 145. Matt Riddle is one of those rare fighters who has spent his entire professional MMA career in the Ultimate Fighting Championships. The majority of this fight is going to be contested on the ground and it will be Matt Riddle out wrestling his foe to get the win.

Another welterweight division fight is up next as Brian “Bad Boy” Ebersole (50-14-0) is in action against James Head (8-2-0). Brian Ebersole just competed less than a month ago at UFC On FX IV, having defeated TJ Waldburger by unanimous decision. James Head has split both of his UFC fights, defeating Papi Abedi and having suffered a defeat to Nick Ring. This fight will be dependent on the gas tank of Brian Ebersole, but he will be prepared enough to take the victory over James Head.

Heavyweight fighters will be featured next as Shawn “The Savage” Jordan (13-3-0) battles Cheick Kongo (17-7-0). Shawn Jordan is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Oli Thompson back at UFC On FX II. Cheick Kongo has won three of his last five in the UFC, most notably defeating Matt Mitrione at UFC 137. This fight will be a slugfest from the beginning to the end, but it will be Cheick Kongo taking out the replacement fighter.

Up next is a middleweight division fight as Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch (15-4-0) takes on Hector “Lightning” Lombard (31-2-0). Tim Boetsch is currently undefeated as a middleweight in the UFC, last defeating Yushin Okami at UFC 144. Hector Lombard will be making his UFC debut in this fight as he was previously the Bellator Middleweight Champion. These are two fighters who compete with similar styles, but it will be Tim Boetsch ruining his opponents UFC debut.

Headlining this card is a UFC Interim Bantamweight Title decision fight as “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (26-5-0) faces Renan Barao (28-1-0). Urijah Faber earned this opportunity at the title after defeating Brian Bowles by submission at UFC 139. Renan Barao enters the fight riding a twenty eight fight winning streak, which includes two victories in the UFC. This fight has the potential to be a “fight of the year” candidate, but it will be Renan Barao pulling the upset.
