UFC ON FOX IV MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 8/3/2012 8:16 PM

Tomorrow night, there will be a new UFC Light Heavyweight Title top contender as Mauricio Rua/Brandon Vera and Lyoto Machida/Ryan Bader battle for the opportunity. Jamie Varner will also look to continue his road back to title contention against the always tough Joe Lauzon. Also, Mike Swick returns after a very long layoff as he battles DaMarques Johnson in a welterweight battle.

Kicking off the action is a welterweight division fight as Mike “Quick” Swick (14-4-0) does battle with DaMarques “Darkness” Johnson (15-10-0). Mike Swick has not stepped into the octagon in well over two years, with his last fight being a loss to Paulo Thiago at UFC 109. DaMarques Johnson has rotated wins and losses in his last six UFC fights, with his last fight being a loss to John Maguire at UFC On Fuel TV II. Having a very long layoff is going to badly hurt Mike Swick in this one as DaMarques Johnson gets the biggest victory of his career.

We move to the lightweight division for our next fight as Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (21-7-0) battles Jamie “C-4” Varner (20-6-0). Joe Lauzon has won two of his last three in the UFC, most notably defeating Melvin Guillard at UFC 136. Jamie Varner is currently undefeated in his second UFC run, having defeated Edson Barboza at UFC 146. This fight has the potential to be the “fight of the night” and it will be Jamie Varner keeping his streak alive.

Up next is a light heavyweight division fight as Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (17-3-0) takes on Ryan “Darth” Bader (14-2-0). Lyoto Machida is competing for the first time since UFC 140, where he lost to UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. Ryan Bader enters the fight riding a two fight losing streak, defeating both Jason Brilz and Quinton Jackson. This is a classic striker versus grappler encounter and it will be the grappler in Ryan Bader out wrestling Lyoto Machida to get the duke.

Headlining this card is a light heavyweight division fight as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-6-0) faces Brandon “The Truth” Vera (12-5-0). Mauricio Rua has only won one of his last three, with that lone victory coming over Forrest Griffin at UFC 134. Brandon Vera ended a three fight losing streak back at UFC 137, defeating Eliot Marshall by unanimous decision. There is no way I see Brandon Vera winning the fight as it will be Mauricio Rua blitzing through him to get the win.
