Controversial or not, the UFC Lightweight Championship remained around the waist of Ben Henderson this past Saturday Night. Former friends in Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard settled their issue, while Yushin Okami also returned to form. Also, Max Holloway ended and undefeated streak and Nik Lentz made his featherweight debut in the UFC.
Round One: A Not So “Smooth†Victory
While their two fights will go down for their controversial decisions, in the end it was Ben Henderson who kept the gold after facing Frankie Edgar for the second time at UFC 150. After five rounds of back and forth action, two of the three judges thought Ben Henderson did a better job than his foe. Ben Henderson now has to put Frankie Edgar in the rear view mirror, because there is a host of challengers on the road ahead. While the champion is moving on, Frankie Edgar has a major choice to make as to which division he will be competing in next.
Next Round For Ben Henderson: Nate Diaz
Next Round For Frankie Edgar: A drop to the featherweight division
Round Two: The Cowboy Rides High
At one point in time, both Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard were friends and training partners, then an opportunity came calling in the octagon. On Saturday Night, it took Donald Cerrone less than two minutes to knock out Melvin Guiillard after a slow start. Donald Cerrone has now won six of seven in the UFC and could be very close to a title shot of his very own. However, Melvin Guillard must start improving his game before he is out of the title picture forever.
Next Round For Donald Cerrone: Anthony Pettis
Next Round For Melvin Guillard: Jamie Varner, Mac Danzig or Edson Barboza
Round Three: The Return Of The Thunder
Ever since earning the opportunity to compete for the UFC Middleweight Title at UFC 134, Yushin Okami has seen his career fall down a scary path. Following defeats to both Anderson Silva and Tim Boetsch, Yushin Okami needed a victory over Buddy Roberts. It would be a victory that Yushin Okami handily earned as he smashed Buddy Roberts in oblivion on Saturday Night. If Yushin Okami can start building some momentum again, a second crack at the gold may not be out of the question.
Next Round For Yushin Okami: Rousimar Palhares, Hector Lombard or Jake Shields
Next Round For Buddy Roberts: Andrew Craig, Jared Hamman or Tom Watson
Round Four: Blessed Indeed
Max Holloway came into the UFC and fought Dustin Poirier as a relative unknown, two victories later and the fighter is being labeled as the next big prospect in the UFC. In the opening fight of the UFC 150 pay-per-view, Max Holloway floored Justin Lawrence with some punches to the body that left the fighter unable to continue. Max Holloway, if built up correctly by the promotion, could become a future UFC Featherweight Champion. Justin Lawrence, despite suffering his first career defeat, still has a bright future ahead of his as well.
Next Round For Max Holloway: Darren Elkins, Pablo Garza or Nam Phan
Next Round For Justin Lawrence: Andie Ogle, Robert Peralta or Sam Sicilia
Round Five: The Carny Finds A Home
Nik Lentz shocked a lot of people when he announced that he was moving from the UFC Lightweight Division to the UFC Featherweight Division. However, after UFC 150, it looks like Nik Lentz was right about changing weight classes the entire time. In took the former lightweight less than five minutes to dispatch of fellow featherweight Eiji Mitsuoka. If Nik Lentz can keep the momentum going in his new weight class, it will not be long until he gets a title opportunity.
Next Round For Nik Lentz: Rani Yahya, Dennis Bermudez or Manny Gamburyan
Next Round For Eiji Mitsuoka: A UFC release
