FIVE ROUNDS WITH STRIKEFORCE: ROUSEY VS. KAUFMAN

By David Tees on 8/20/2012 7:00 PM

This past weekend featured two MMA events, with the Legacy Fighting Championships being the other, but either way it is Ronda Rousey who came out looking like a million bucks. A new top contender for the Strikeforce Middleweight Title was decided between Ronaldo Souza and Derek Brunson. Also, Ovince St. Preux made a huge statement and a former women’s bantamweight champion returned to form.

Round One: The Arm Bar Queen Reigns Supreme

Prior to her title defense against Sarah Kaufman, Ronda Rousey was pretty much appointed the face of female MMA. However, after her fifty four second thrashing of Sarah Kaufman, Ronda Rousey now can be considered the unchallenged ruler of female MMA. While there is no doubt that Sarah Kaufman is a more than capable fighter, she just had no answer for the champions arm bar. While the future of Sarah Kaufman is cloudy, Ronda Rousey already has her next championship bout ready to go.

Next Round For Ronda Rousey: Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos

Next Round For Sarah Kaufman: Miesha Tate, Liz Carmouche or Julie Kedzie

Round Two: “Jacare” Bites Back

There is no doubt that the Strikeforce Middleweight Division is thin on talent right now, but at least we know who the next top contender will be. In under a minute total, Ronaldo Souza clobbered Derek Brunson with a few punches until he was left out cold. Ronaldo Souza was the fighter who dropped the Strikeforce Middleweight Title to Luke Rockhold and now he has a chance to regain it. While there is no doubt that Derek Brunson has a bright future in Strikeforce, he has a little bit of career rebuilding to do.

Next Round For Ronaldo Souza: Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold

Next Round For Derek Brunson: Tim Kennedy, Robbie Lawler or Roger Gracie

Round Three: The One Punch Knockout

Ovince St. Preux has been a fighter on the verge of a breakout in Strikeforce and after Saturday Night, has had that breakthrough. In the third round of his fight with TJ Cook, Ovince St. Preux clobbered TJ Cook with a single punch that dropped the fighter on the mat and he was put to sleep. Ovince St. Preux now finds himself nearing the top of a division that is currently in need of a new champion. Sadly, MMA fans will not be seeing any form of improvement in TJ Cook’s game until he can get more focused on training.

Next Round For Ovince St. Preux: Gian Villante, Virgil Zwicker or Mike Kyle

Next Round For TJ Cook: Trevor Smith, Derrick Mehmen or Yoel Romero

Round Four: A Victorious Cupcake

There was a small uproar created when a women’s fight between Miesha Tate and Julie Kedzie was put on the preliminary card of Saturday’s event. That uproar grew tenfold after the two warriors fought as they put on a potential “fight of the year” candidate. Julie Kedzie nearly had the former champion defeated on several occasions before tapping out to an arm bar. Miesha Tate now finds herself in contention again for a title shot, even though she believes that she does not deserve one.

Next Round For Miesha Tate: Sarah Kaufman, Germaine De Randamie or Liz Carmouche

Next Round For Julie Kedzie: Sarah Kaufman, Liz Carmouche or Germaine De Randamie

Round Five: Herb Dean Makes A Bad Call

Usually Herb dean is one of the better referees currently in MMA right now, but that reputation took a little hit on Saturday Night. Early in the preliminary card fight between Adlan Amagov and Keith Berry, Adlan Amagov dropped Keith Berry and followed it up with some strikes. Keith Berry communicated to Herb dean that he was fine, but the referee took is as a sign that Keith Berry was done and he promptly stopped the fight. Adlan Amagov did walk away with a victory, but that victory definitely came with a big pile of controversy attached to it.

Next Round For Adlan Amagov: A rematch with Keith Berry
