LEGACY FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS 14 AXS TV MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 9/13/2012 10:10 AM

With no UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator this weekend, the Legacy Fighting Championships has a big chance to make an impact on the MMA world. This card will be headlined by a battle for the Legacy FC Interim Welterweight Title, as the current champion is injured. Also, a UFC veteran will be making his Legacy FC debut and plenty of other great fighters will see time in the cage.

Kicking off the action is a featherweight division fight as David Armas (2-4-0) competes against Darrion Caldwell (0-0-0). David Armas enters this fight riding a two fight winning streak, last defeating quaint Kempf at Legacy FC 13. Darrion Caldwell will be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, but he did compete many times as an amateur. David Armas has more professional experience than his opponent in this fight, but is clearly not top level competition as Darrion Caldwell gets his first pro win.

A pair of flyweights hit the cage next as Ryan Hollis (0-0-0) will be standing across the cage from matt Schnell (0-0-0). Ryan Hollis will be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, but he did win two of three as an amateur. Matt Schnell will also be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, but he may be remembered most for appearing on the MTV reality show “Caged.” This fight is basically a pick ‘em with both fighters making their debuts, but I’ll go with Matt Schnell on this one.

Welterweights enter the cage next as Lester Batres (2-1-0) does battle with Jonathan “The Hulk” Harris (5-2-0). Lester Batres enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak, with those victories coming over Justin Murray and Danny Rodriguez. Jonathan Harris is coming off of a loss to Chidi Njokuani, who is the younger brother of UFC veteran Anthony Njokuani. This should be one of the better fights of the event, but it will be Jonathan Harris squeaking out the victory.

We move to the lightweight division for the next fight as Brandon Farran (6-4-0) is in action against Derrick “D-Rock” Krantz (12-6-0). Brandon Farran enters the fight riding a three fight winning streak, with all of those victories coming in the opening round. Derrick Krantz has only won one of his last four fights, with that lone victory coming over Eric Scallan at Bellator 61. Derrick Krantz will be looking to rebound from his poor Bellator run and he will do so with a victory over Brandon Farran.

We now drop to the bantamweight division for the next fight as Steven “Ocho” Peterson (7-2-0) battles Cody Williams (3-2-0). Steven Peterson is currently undefeated in Legacy FC competition, having defeated both Steve Garcia and Matt Hobar. Cody Williams has spent the majority of his career in Legacy FC, winning two of four in the promotion. Steven Peterson is on a much bigger role in Legacy FC and that roll will continue with a victory on Friday Night.

Up next is a flyweight division fight as Antonio Banuelos (20-8-0) takes on Joshua “The Gremlin” Sampo (7-2-0). Antonio Banuelos is coming off of an excellent run in the DREAM Bantamweight Grand Prix, losing in the finals to Bibiano Fernandes. Joshua Sampo has won four of his last five, with his lone loss in those fights coming to UFC veteran Will Campuzano. These are two of the better fighters not currently under a UFC deal, but it will be Antonio Banuelos getting the duke.

Headlining this card is a Legacy FC Interim Welterweight Title decision fight as Lucas Pimenta (8-1-0) faces Jeff “The Executioner” Rexroad (5-1-0). Lucas Pimenta enters this fight riding an eight fight winning streak, which includes a victory over UFC veteran Shamar Bailey. Jeff Rexroad enters the fight riding a four fight winning streak and he has spent his entire MMA career in Legacy FC. The winner of this fight will eventually have to fight Legacy FC welterweight champion Jorge Patino and that challenger will be Lucas Pimenta.
