INVICTA FC III CARD PREVIEW: PART ONE

By David Tees on 10/4/2012 3:37 PM

The long MMA weekend will come to an end Saturday Night as Invicta FC presents their third event and the crowning of their first champion. Since the entire fourteen fight card is not broken into a main card and preliminary card, the previews will just be broken up into two parts. The first portion of the preview features Strikeforce and Bellator veterans, plus a few fighters making their pro debuts.

Kicking off the action is a featherweight division fight as Katalina Malungahu (2-0-0) does battle with Ediane “India” Gomes (8-2-0). Katalina Malungahu made her professional MMA debut in late 2011, but has finished both of her opponents in the opening round. Ediane Gomes enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak and has fought current Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey. Katalina Malungahu is known for finishing fights, but Ediane Gomes is a lot more experienced and that will carry her to victory.

Strawweight fighters will hit the cage next as Tecia “The Tiny Tornado” Torres (0-0-0) is in action against Kaiyana Rain (0-0-0). Tecia Torres will be making her professional MMA debut in this fight, but did go undefeated as an amateur. Kaiyana Rain will also be making her professional MMA debut in this fight, but did win five of seven as an amateur. Tecia Torres was better than Kaiyana Rain as an amateur and she will start her professional career off better as well with the victory.

A pair of bantamweights will compete next as Jessamyn “The Gun” Duke (1-0-0) sees cage time against Marciea “Black Widow” Allen (1-0-0). Jessamyn Duke made her professional MMA debut at Invicta FC II, defeating Suzie Montero by TKO in the third round. Marciea Allen made her professional MMA debut this past August, defeating Chandra Engel by submission. These are two fighters who have looked very good early in their MMA careers, but it will be Jessamyn Duke keeping her streak alive.

Another strawweight division battle will happen next as Amy “Lil’ Dynamite” Davis (3-3-0) stands across the cage from Stephanie “Macaquinha” Frausto (3-4-0). Amy Davis is currently undefeated in Invicta FC competition, defeating Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc at Invicta FC I. Stephanie Frausto enters the fight winning one of her last four and is the sister of Bellator Women’s Flyweight Champion Zoila Gurgel. These are two good up and coming strikers, but it will be Amy Davis remain undefeated in Invicta FC competition.

More strawweight action is taking place next as Ashley “Smashley” Cummins (3-0-0) battles Joanne Calderwood (3-0-0). Ashley Cummins competed at the first ever Invicta FC card, defeating Sofia Bagherdai by unanimous decision. Joanne Calderwood will be making her Invicta FC debut, but did compete in the Super Fight League, defeating Lena Ovchynnikova. This fight will be determined by where the fight takes place, as Ashley Cummins puts the fight on the ground to get a decision.

Up next is a strawweight division fight as Carla Esparza (7-2-0) will be taking on Lynn “Lights Out” Alvarez (5-2-0). Carla Esparza is currently undefeated in Invicta FC competition, having defeated Sarah Schneider at Invicta FC II. Lynn Alvarez recently saw a four fight winning streak snapped at Bellator 24, following a first round defeat to Jessica Aguilar. Lynn Alvarez has been out of competition for a while now and that will hurt her as Carla Esparza gets the duke.

The final fight being previewed today takes place in the featherweight division as Julia “The Jewel” Budd (3-2-0) faces Danielle “The Honey Badger” West (4-3-0). Julia Budd is currently undefeated in Invicta FC competition, having defeated Elina Nillson at Invicta FC II. Danielle West enters this fight on a week’s notice and does so coming off of a loss back in April 2012. Being a very late replacement is going to hurt Danielle West in this one as Julia Budd picks up another Invicta FC victory.
