For two straight events, UFC On FX V and UFC On Fuel TV V, it was the heavyweights who took center stage in the main events. Just like the UFC On Fuel TV V main event, the heavyweights put on a show that ended in a brutal fashion. Also, Jake Ellenberger got his revenge and a top contender to the UFC Flyweight Title was determined.
Round One: A Bigfoot Sighting
Antonio Silva need to get a big win this past Friday Night or his UFC career would have ended, luckily for “Bigfootâ€, he succeeded in the main event. Travis Browne fought valiantly, but a knee injury early in the opening round hampered his ability to keep against Antonio Silva. Antonio Silva took advantage of that injury and defeated Travis Browne by TKO midway through the first round. Travis Browne still has a bright future ahead of him and it will be interesting to see how he reacts to his first career defeat.
Next Round For Antonio Silva: Stefan Struve, Ben Rothwell or Cheick Kongo
Next Round For Travis Browne: Stipe Miocic, Mark Hunt or Matt Mitrione
Round Two: The Juggernaut Gets Revenge
It was many years back in the International Fight League that Jay Hieron defeated Jake Ellenberger in their first meeting. Fast forward to UFC On FX V, Jake Ellenberger gained his long awaited revenge by outpointing Jay Hieron on route to a decision victory. Jake Ellenberger, with that victory, now finds himself back in contention for the UFC Welterweight Title. Jay Hieron took a long time to get back to the UFC and hopefully he will get another chance to compete in the octagon.
Next Round For Jake Ellenberger: Siyar Bahadurzada, John Hathaway or Mike Pyle
Next Round For Jay Hieron: Thiago Alves, Mike Pierce or Matthew Riddle
Round Three: The Next Challenger For The UFC Flyweight title Is…
John Dodson, who stopped Jussier Formiga by TKO in the second round of their flyweight division top contenders battle. John Dodson looked like his usual self battling Jussier Formiga, while Jussier Formiga looked tentative from the beginning. John Dodson now moves onto UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson, the two should battle sometime in early 2013. Jussier Formiga did not look good in his first UFC appearance, despite being one of the best flyweights in all of MMA.
Next Round For John Dodson: UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson
Next Round For Jussier Formiga: Joseph Benavidez, Ian McCall or Darren Uyenoyama
Round Four: The Comeback Kids
The last two fights that aired on the Fuel TV Preliminary Card featured four different fighters, but two very similar endings. The first of the two fights took place in the welterweight division as Mike Pierce defeated Aaron Simpson via second round TKO. The second of those fights took place in the lightweight division as Michael Johnson knocked out Danny Castillo. The reason that this is fascinating is because both fights featured the winners making the comeback after be destroyed in the first round by their opponents and had to make shocking comebacks in the second round to gain victory.
Next Round For Michael Johnson: Yves Edwards, Thiago Tavares or TJ Grant
Next Round For Danny Castillo: Terry Etim, John Makdessi or Ramsey Nijem
Next Round For Mike Pierce: Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy or Jay Hieron
Next Round For Aaron Simpson: DaMarques Johnson, John Maguire or Pascal Kraus
Round Five: The Missing Fights
When the card for UFC On FX V was announced, there were twelve total fights announced for the October event. By the time the card began, we were down two fights as Thiago Tavares/Dennis Hallman and Jeremy Stephens/Yves Edwards were off the card. The Thiago Tavares/Dennis Hallman fight was scrapped after Dennis Hallman failed to make weight, blaming family issues. The bout between Jeremy Stephens and Yves Edwards was pulled after Jeremy Stephens was arrested the morning of the fight.
Next Round For Thiago Tavares: Yves Edwards, Jeremy Stephens or Michael Johnson
Next Round For Dennis Hallman: Dealing with those family issues
Next Round For Yves Edwards: Jeremy Stephens, Michael Johnson or Thiago Tavares
Next Round For Jeremy Stephens: Yves Edwards, Michael Johnson or Thiago Tavares
