FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC 154

By David Tees on 11/22/2012 9:26 AM

It took a long time, but reigning UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre finally returned to the octagon following his knee injury. In the co-main event, Johny Hendricks made a strong statement in regards to getting a UFC Welterweight Title shot. Also, a lightweight fighter became a contender, “The Machine” goes down and Patrick Cote gets an odd victory.

Round One: A Title Unified

When Georges St. Pierre went down to a knee injury, Carlos Condit became the UFC Interim Welterweight Champion when he defeated Nick Diaz. This past Saturday Night, the championships were unified when Georges St. Pierre defeated Carlos Condit by unanimous decision. Georges St. Pierre looked like the GSP of old entering this fight, except for the head kick by Carlos Condit that rocked him in the third round. The question for Georges St. Pierre now is whether he wants to defend his gold next or face the UFC Middleweight Champion.

Next Round For Georges St. Pierre: UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva or Johny Hendricks

Next Round For Carlos Condit: Martin Kampmann, Jake Ellenberger or Mike Pierce

Round Two: The One Punch Wonder

Johny Hendricks powerful left punch is no longer a thing of fantasy in the UFC, it is a full blown weapon in the promotion. It took less than a minute for Johny Hendricks to take out Martin Kampmann with that vaulted left hand to secure a victory. Johny Hendricks now earns himself a shot at the UFC Welterweight Title, the question remains it UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva fights Georges St. Pierre first. Either way, Johny Hendricks was a relative unknown a few years back in the UFC and now the former wrestler is on the verge of a title shot.

Next Round For Johny Hendricks: UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre

Next Round For Martin Kampmann: Carlos Condit, Dong Hyun Kim or Dan Hardy

Round Three: The Arrival Of Rafael Dos Anjos

Outside of Mac Danzig, the only fighters to defeat Mark Bocek in the UFC were either current or former UFC Welterweight Champions. That fact is what makes Rafael Dos Anjos’s unanimous decision victory over Mark Bocek such a great accomplishment. Rafael Dos Anjos has always been a fighter ready for a breakthrough in the UFC and now it seems that the breakthrough has occurred. Mark Bocek is still a viable threat in the division, but he needs to start adding a striking game to his dominant wrestling abilities.

Next Round For Rafael Dos Anjos: Gray Maynard, TJ Grant or Jamie Varner

Next Round For Mark Bocek: Evan Dunham, Danny Castillo or Sam Stout

Round Four: “The Machine” Is Broken

It was just a little over a year ago that Mark Hominick was battling Jose Aldo in Canada for the UFC Featherweight Title. In the present time, Mark Hominick has lost four straight fights and is most likely getting cut from the UFC. This past Saturday Night, Mark Hominick looked utterly helpless as Pablo Garza both outwrestled and out-struck him. Pablo Garza was in need of a big victory as well, having lost two straight before achieving victory on Saturday Night.

Next Round For Pablo Garza: Antonio Carvalho, Manny Gamburyan or Jimy Hettes

Next Round For Mark Hominick: A UFC release

Round Five: It Ends With A DQ

One of the fights I was looking forward to the most this past Saturday Night was a preliminary card fight between Patrick Cote and Alessio Sakara. For the first ninety seconds of the fight, the fight looked like the brawl we all thought it was to become. Then Alessio Sakara dropped Patrick Cote and dropped plenty of illegal hammer fist strikes to the back of his head. The result of that action was a disqualification loss and a slugfest ruined by some truly illegal blows.

Next Round For Patrick Cote: A rematch with Alessio Sakara

Next round For Alessio Sakara: A rematch with Patrick Cote
