While one promotion shut its doors this weekend , Bellator begins what can be considered the most important season in the company’s history as they debut on Spike TV. Bellator officials gave us quite a card to check out on Spike TV, with two championship bouts on the card. The Bellator 85 Preliminary Card is stacked as well, with two light heavyweight tournament fights and UFC veterans in action.
Kicking off the action is a lightweight division fight as Cleber Luciano (7-4-0) stands across the cage from “Handsome†Mario Navarro (4-2-0). Luciano enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak and once competed against UFC veteran Evan Dunham. Navarro is currently undefeated in Bellator competition, having defeated Anthony Bain back at Bellator 82. These are two exciting lightweights to keep an eye on in the future, but it will be Cleber Luciano winning on this night.
More lightweight action will be taking place next as JJ “Superman†Ambrose (18-4-0-1NC) does battle with “Mr. Unbreakable†Brian Warren (18-16-1). Ambrose is a fighter who has won eight of his last nine fights, but his lone defeat did come under the Bellator banner. Warren has won five of his last seven entering this fight, with his two losses coming to UFC veterans Ben Saunders and Jeremy Horn. Ambrose should be competing in this season’s lightweight tournament instead of the prelims, but he will earn the victory either way.
Another lightweight division fight is up next as Michael “The Joker†Guymon (14-5-1) competes against Savant “Black Superman†Young (10-9-0). Guymon has been undefeated since getting released from the UFC, which came after a loss to DaMarques Johnson at UFC Fights For The Troops II. Young has rotated wins and losses in his last five fights, with his last fight being a defeat to Robert Emerson. Guymon has been on quite the roll since his UFC release and that roll will continue on Thursday Night with his third straight victory.
We move to the welterweight division for the next fight as Joe “Mongo†Williams (7-1-0) is in action against “The Chosyn 1†Jamie Yager (6-3-0). Williams has split both of his Bellator appearances, defeating Rod Montoya and suffering a defeat to Andy Uhrich. Yager has won four of his last five entering the fight, with that lone loss coming to UFC veteran Josh Burkman. Williams will gain the biggest victory of his career this coming Thursday as he defeats the UFC veteran in Yager.
Featherweights will step into the cage next as Joe Camacho (13-17-3) is battling Aaron “Blood Spiller†Miller (12-8-0-1NC). Camacho has only won two of his last seven fights and he has recently been fighting in the Rage In The Cage promotion. Miller enters the fight riding a three fight winning streak, which includes a lone victory in the top rated M-1 Challenge promotion. How this fight got on this card is beyond even myself, but it will be Aaron Miller picking up his fourth straight.
A light heavyweight fight is happening next as Jason “The Punisher†Lambert (25-12-0) faces Hector “Sick Dog†Ramirez (9-4-1). Lambert has only won two of his last eight fights and “The Punisher†has not competed in well over two years. Ramirez has won three of four since his UFC release, most notably defeating Rob MacDonald in March 2008. This should be an interesting of two former UFC competitors, but it will be the more active Ramirez getting the duke.
Up next is a light heavyweight division tournament opening round fight as Atanas Djambazov (17-2-0) battles “The Hardcore Kid†Emanuel Newton (18-7-1). Djambazov enters the fight riding a ten fight winning streak, with the majority of the victories coming in the Max Fight promotion. Newton last competed in the Bellator “Summer Series†Light Heavyweight Tournament, losing to Attila Vegh in the semi-finals. Djambazov has been a dominating fighter as of late and that domination will continue as he defeats Newton.
Headlining this portion of the card is another light heavyweight division tournament opening round fight as Jacob “The Psycho†Noe (8-1-0-1NC) takes on “The Silverback†Seth Petruzelli (14-6-0). Noe is currently undefeated under the Bellator banner, defeating Brian Albin at Bellator 73 this past August. Petruzelli has not competed in well over a year, but his last fight was a victory over former UFC Heavyweight Champion Ricco Rodriguez. Petruzelli has been on a roll since his second UFC release and that roll will continue as he advances to the tournament semi-finals.
