BELLATOR 86 SPIKE.COM PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/21/2013 9:17 PM

Last Thursday Night, the Bellator Fighting Championships made a high successful debut on Spike TV, with two championships defended. Bellator returns to action again this coming Thursday with the welterweight championship on the line. There is a six fight preliminary card airing first on Spike.com, with two tournament matches taking place.

Kicking off the action is a middleweight division fight as Cortez “Hollywood” Coleman (8-3-0) competes against Matt Jones (4-3-0). Coleman recently ended a two fight losing streak at King Of The Cage: Bad Intentions II, defeating Brandon Lyons. Jones will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, with both victories coming in the King Of The Cage promotion. Both fighters have similar experience in the King Of The Cage promotion, but it will be Coleman earning the win.

Lightweights will step into the cage next as Zach Church (1-1-0) stands across the cage from Damon Jackson (3-0-0). Church is coming off of his first professional MMA defeat, which came at the hands of his Bellator opponent, Damon Jackson. Jackson is an undefeated fighter who has finished all but one opponent thus far in the opening round. Not much has changed for either fighter since their first encounter, which is why Jackson will win his second straight against Church.

A featherweight division fight is taking place next as Mike Maldonado (3-0-0) does battle with “The Black Rooster” Joseph Salas (2-3-0). Maldonado is an undefeated fighter who has achieved all of his victories in the King Of The Cage promotion. Salas will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak, with both defeats happening in the Legacy Fighting Championships. These are two fighters on very different career paths right now, but it will be Maldonado remaining undefeated.

More featherweight action will happen next as Javier Obregon (4-3-0) is in action against Hunter Tucker (4-0-0). Obregon has won two of his last three entering this fight, with that lone loss coming against Chris Jones. Tucker is an undefeated fighter who has scored three of his four wins in the Jacksons MMA Series promotion. Tucker has been on an unbelievable roll thus far in his professional MMA career and that roll will continue on Thursday Night.

Up next is a welterweight tournament opening round fight as Raul “Smash Mode” Amaya (10-1-0) battles Jose “Zezao Trator” Gomes (32-8-1). Amaya has split both of his Bellator appearances, defeating Kenny Moss and suffering a defeat to Ben Saunders. Gomes enters the fight riding a three fight winning streak and has fought against UFC veteran Edson Barboza. This fight is an excellent way to kick off the welterweight tournament, but it will be Amaya advancing to the next round.

Headlining this portion of the card is a welterweight tournament opening round fight as Brent Weedman (20-8-1) faces Marius “The Whitemare” Zaromskis (19-7-0-1NC). Weedman made it to the finals of the season six welterweight tournament before losing to Rick Hawn. Zaromskis made it to the semi-finals of the season seven tournament before dropping a fight to Andrey Koreshkov. Weedman has more skills than Zaromskis inside the cage at this moment in their careers and that is why he will be advancing.
