LEGACY FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS 17 AXS TV MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/29/2013 9:59 PM

Sandwiched in between Bellator 87 and UFC 156 is an excellent fight card from the folks at the Legacy Fighting Championships. Headlining this card is a battle between a UFC veteran and a Bellator veteran as Pete Spratt faces Dan Hornbuckle. Also, Jared Rosholt continues his run back to the top and plenty of other great fighters are in competition.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division fight as James “Duece” King (15-12-0) competes against Reynaldo “The Truth” Trujillo (12-9-0). King has only won one of his last four fights, with that lone victory coming over Thomas Gifford at a Kickass Productions event. Trujillo will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak, with his last victory coming in a May 2012 Ultimate Warriors Fighting event. This is a must win fight for both competitors, but it will be Trujillo picking up the much needed victory this Friday Night.

Bantamweights are set to enter the cage next as Billy Buch (3-1-0) stands across the cage from Patrick Ybarra (2-0-0). Buch will be looking to comeback from his first professional MMA defeat, which came at the hands of Jonathan Lopez. Ybarra is currently undefeated as a professional, with both of his opponents finished in the opening round. These are two top up and coming bantamweight competitors, but it will be Patrick Ybarra remaining undefeated in the end.

A featherweight battle is up next as “The Judge” Johnny Ray Rodriguez (2-1-0) does battle with Johnny Ridriguez (0-0-0). Ray Rodriguez is currently undefeated in Legacy FC competition, having defeated Joseph Salas at Legacy FC 13. Rodriguez will be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, he also went winless as an amateur fighter. This is easily the most confusing piece of live coverage I will be typing up on Friday Night, but it will be Ray Rodriguez getting the duke.

Another featherweight division fight is up next as Kevin Aguilar (4-1-0) is in action against Nick Gonzales (3-0-0). Aguilar will enter the fight riding a four fight winning streak and has competed once in the Bellator Fighting Championships. Gonzales is an undefeated fighter who has spent the majority of his young career in the Gladiator Challenge promotion. These are two of the better up and coming featherweights in MMA right now, but it will be Aguilar ending his foes undefeated streak.

Up next is a heavyweight division fight as “The Black Eagle” Richard Odoms (7-0-0) faces Jared “The Big Show” Rosholt (4-1-0). Odoms will be competing for the first time in over a year, but he does hold a victory over UFC veteran Darrill Schoonover. Rosholt will be competing for the first time since losing a Legacy FC Heavyweight Title fight to Derrick Lewis. The winner of this fight could get an opportunity at the Legacy FC Heavyweight Title and that fighter will be Rosholt.

Headlining this card is a welterweight division fight as Dan “The Handler” Hornbuckle (22-5-0) battles “The Secret Weapon” Pete Spratt (25-21-0). Hornbuckle will be competing for the first time since his Bellator release, which came after a defeat to Luis Santos at Bellator 49. Spratt has won three of his last four fights entering Friday Night, but has not competed in nearly a full year. There is a possible return to one of the bigger promotions for whoever wins this fight and it will be Hornbuckle getting that victory.
