UFC 156 FX PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/31/2013 3:53 PM

While this weekend every year is always known as Super Bowl Weekend, the UFC has been carving out a niche of its own the night before the “big game.” This year, the UFC decided to give us MMA quite a headliner when Jose Aldo faces Frankie Edgar for the featherweight title. The FX portion of the preliminary card is loaded as well, with several key fights in the lightweight division.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division fight as Yves “Thugjitsu Master” Edwards (42-18-1) does battle with Isaac Vallie-Flagg (13-3-1). Edwards has rotated wins and losses in his last five UFC appearances, with his last fight being a victory over Jeremy Stephens at UFC On Fox V. Vallie-Flagg will be making his UFC debut in this fight after a successful two fight run in the Strikeforce promotion. It kinds of feels like Vallie-Flagg is getting thrown to the wolves in this fight and the point will be proven with an Edwards victory.

More lightweight action is happening next as Bobby “King” Green (19-5-0) battles Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann (15-3-0). Green will be making his UFC debut on the strength of a four fight winning streak, most notably defeating James Terry at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier. Volkmann has won six of his last seven under the UFC banner, with that lone defeat coming to Paul Sass. This fight is going to be a stern test for both competitors, but it will be Volkmann pulling out the victory.

Up next is a welterweight division contest as Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron (23-6-0) faces Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (10-1-0). Hieron is currently winless in his third UFC run, suffering a defeat to Jake Ellenberger at UFC On FX V. Woodley will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but is coming off of a Strikeforce Welterweight Title loss to Nate Marquardt. These are two fighters who use virtually the exact same strategy inside the octagon, but it will be Woodley getting his first UFC win.

Headlining this portion of the card is a lightweight division encounter as Evan Dunham (13-3-0) takes on Gleison Tibau (26-8-0). Dunham has only won two of his last five fights entering Saturday Night, most notably defeating Nik Lentz at UFC On Fox II. Tibau has won four of his last five fights, with that lone defeat coming at the hands of Khabib Nurmagomedov. This is a must win fight of both competitors are to remain relevant in the division, but it will be Tibau getting that victory.
