The first of many big fights of 2013 will be taking place this Saturday Night when featherweight champions Jose Aldo faces Frankie Edgar. The card will also feature a potential heavyweight title eliminator when Alistair Overeem battles Antonio Silva. Also, Rashad Evans will clash with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and there are two other important fights as well.
Kicking off the action is a flyweight division fight as Joseph Benavidez (16-3-0) collides with Ian “Uncle Creepy†McCall (11-3-1). Benavidez will be competing for the first time since losing a UFC Flyweight Title fight to current champion Demetrious Johnson. McCall is currently winless in UFC competition, fighting Demetrious Johnson to both a draw and a defeat. The winner of this could be in line for a shot at the flyweight title and that fighter getting the shot will be Benavidez.
Welterweights will be stepping into the cage next as Jon Fitch (24-4-1) competes against Damian Maia (17-4-0). Fitch has won six of his last eight bouts in the UFC, with that lone loss being a quick knockout to Johny Hendricks. Maia has been undefeated since moving to the welterweight division, defeating both Dong Hyun Kim and Rick Story. This is a pivotal fight in both fighters careers, but it will be Fitch moving one step closer to another title opportunity.
A heavyweight division fight is up next as Alistair “Demolition Man†Overeem (36-11-0-1NC) battles Antonio “Pezao†Silva (17-4-0). Overeem will be competing for the first time since a UFC 141 victory over Brock Lesnar, he has been suspended since for a failed drug test. Silva will be looking to build off of his first career UFC victory, which came over Travis Browne at UFC On FX V. Overeem will get a title shot if he is able to defeat Silva, which is exactly what will happen on Saturday Night.
Up next is a light heavyweight division fight as “Suga†Rashad Evans (17-2-1) takes on Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro†Nogueira (20-5-0). Evans will be competing for the first time since losing a UFC Light Heavyweight Title shot to Jon Jones at UFC 145. Nogueira has been out of the octagon even longer than Evans, as he last defeated Tito Ortiz back at UFC 141. This is essentially a battle to remain relevant in the light heavyweight division for both competitors, but it will be Evans notching the victory.
Headlining this card is a UFC Featherweight Title fight as champion Jose “Scarface†Aldo (21-1-0) defends against Frankie “The Answer†Edgar (15-3-1). Aldo has successfully defended to gold four times already, last defending against Chad Mendes at UFC 142. Edgar will be making his featherweight division debut in this fight, previously holding the UFC Lightweight Title. This fight may be an early candidate for “fight of the yearâ€, but it will be Aldo holding onto his championship.
