MAXIMUM FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS 36 AXS TV MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 2/13/2013 11:04 AM

In between offerings from both Bellator and the UFC is a pretty stacked card from the Maximum Fighting Championships. The promotion from Canada will headline its offering on AXS TV with title fights in both the middleweight and lightweight divisions. Also, a UFC veteran will step into the ring and an undefeated heavyweight puts his unblemished record on the line.

Kicking off the action is a middleweight division fight as Clay Davidson (7-3-0) competes against Jason Zentgraf (6-1-0). Davidson enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak and once competed against UFC veteran Jesse Taylor. Zentgraf is currently undefeated in MFC competition, having defeated Cody Krahn by submission at MFC 34. A win could put either one of these two fighters near a title shot, but it will be Davidson picking up the big win.

Another middleweight division fight is up next as Leo “Bushido” Bercier (7-2-1-1NC) is in action against Jay Silva (8-6-0). Bercier has won two of his last three fights entering Friday Night, but his last fight was a loss to Jared Torgenson. Silva has won three of six since getting released from the UFC in early-2010, but he did defeat UFC veteran Kendall Grove at Supreme Cage Combat IV. Silva definitely needs the win if he ever wants to get back into the UFC and it will be a win that the fighter gets.

Lightweight action is taking place next as Jonatas “Peixe Frito” Novaes (10-4-0) does battle with Kurt Southern (10-3-0). Novaes has won five of his last six entering this fight, which includes victories over UFC veterans Drew Fickett and Ryan Thomas. Southern will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, but has not competed in nearly two years. Southern’s long layoff is going to hurt him here as Novaes picks up another victory to add to his impressive run.

A pair of heavyweights will battle next as Smealinho Rama (5-0-0) takes on Mike “The Honey Badger” Hackert (6-1-0). Rama is an undefeated fighter who has already defeated both Lee Mein and Ryan Fortin under the MFC banner. Hackert enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak, with both of those victories coming over UFC veteran Tim Hague. This is a pretty good heavyweight battle that is definitely worth checking out, but it will be Rama remaining undefeated in the end.

Up next is a MFC Middleweight Title Fight as champion Elvis “The King” Mutapcic (12-2-0) defends against “Smilin’” Sam Alvey (19-4-0-1NC). Mutapcic enters the fight on the strength of a four fight winning streak and has defeated Strikeforce veteran Zak Cummings. Alvey will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak and has competed on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 16. Mutapcic has already notched up some impressive victories as champion, but his victory over Alvey will be his biggest.

Headlining this card is a MFC Lightweight Title decision fight as Graham Spencer (9-1-0-1NC) faces Mukai “The African Assassin” Maromo (8-2-0). Spencer earned an opportunity to become champion after defeating UFC veteran Shane Nelson at MFC 35. Maromo enters the fight riding a five fight winning streak, but has previously lost to Spencer at a 2010 Awada Fight Club event. These are two fighters who are going to show up on the UFC ‘s radar pretty soon, but it will be Spencer winning the gold in this one.
