On Saturday Night, one of the most important moments in recent MMA history will happen when Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche become the first female competitors to step into the UFC octagon. However, there is plenty more to keep an eye on at UFC 157, such as a light heavyweight title eliminator between Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida. Also, Urijah Faber looks to get back on the winning track and Robbie Lawler returns to the UFC after a very long absence.
Kicking off the action is a welterweight division fight as Josh “Kos†Koscheck (17-6-0) competes against “Ruthless†Robbie Lawler (19-9-0). Koscheck has won two of his last three in the UFC, with that lone defeat coming at the hands of Johny Hendricks. Lawler will be returning to the UFC after a near nine year absence, but he did have a successful run in Strikeforce in between. Lawler always has a chance with his striking ability, but Koscheck has a better all-around game and that will get him the victory.
Another welterweight division fight is happening next as Court “The Crusher†McGee (14-3-0) does battle against Josh “The Dentist†Neer (33-12-1). McGee will be competing for the first time as a welterweight in the UFC, he went three of five as a middleweight prior. Neer enters the fight riding a two fight losing streak, with his defeats coming to Mike Pyle and Justin Edwards. This will be a test for both fighters to see who can remain relevant in the UFC, but it will be McGee grinding out the win.
Bantamweights will be stepping into the cage next as “The California Kid†Urijah Faber (26-6-0) battles Ivan “Pride Of El Salvador†Menjivar (25-9-0). Faber has rotated wins and losses throughout his UFC career, with his last fight being a defeat to Renan Barao at UFC 149. Menjivar has won four of five in UFC competition, most notably defeating Charlie Valencia by TKO at UFC 129. Faber seems to be nearing the end of his run as a fighter, so it will be Menjivar picking up the biggest victory of his career at UFC 157.
Up next is a light heavyweight division fight as Dan “Hendo†Henderson (29-8-0) takes on Lyoto “The Dragon†Machida (18-3-0). Henderson is currently undefeated since returning to the UFC, having defeated Mauricio Rua back at UFC 139. Machida has won two of his last three fights, with that lone loss coming to UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. The winner of this fight will be getting a UFC Light Heavyweight Title opportunity and the fighter getting the shot will be Henderson.
Headlining this card is a UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title Fight as champion “Rowdy†Ronda Rousey (6-0-0) defends against Liz “Girl-Rilla†Carmouche (8-2-0). Rousey became the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion due to the fact that she was the final Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion. Carmouche enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak and has previously competed for the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Title. This is easily the most historic fight to happen within the UFC in a long time, but it will be Rousey securing an arm bar to hold onto the gold.
