For the third straight week, we have another big weekend with three big MMA events and it all kicks off with Bellator 91. Bellator has a great offering, which will be headlined by the first title defense of light heavyweight champion Christian M’Pumbu. The preliminary card is worth checking out as well, with a WEC veteran and a pair of female fighters in action.
Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division fight as Adrian Cruz (3-0-0) competes against Nick Gonzales (3-0-0). Cruz is currently undefeated thus far in his MMA career, with two victories coming in the King Of The Cage promotion. Gonzales is also undefeated thus far in his MMA career, with a pair of victories coming in the Gladiator Challenge promotion. Somebodies “0†has to go in this fight and it will be the “0†of Gonzales going as Cruz gets the victory in the battle of the undefeated.
Heavyweights will be stepping into the cage next as Josh Apelt (8-2-0) stands across the cage from Josh “Big Country†Lanier (3-6-0). Apelt is currently undefeated in Bellator competition, defeating Ed Carpenter by submission at Bellator 79. Lanier has only won one of his last six fights, with that lone victory coming over Alejandro Siller at a Fighter Physique event. Barring a major upset from taking place, this fight should see Apelt easily walking through Lanier at the event.
Another bantamweight division fight is up next as Felipe “Flip†Chavez (5-3-0) does battle against Russell Wilson (1-1-0). Chavez has won three of his last four fights, with that lone loss coming to Mark Oshiro at an Up N’ Up MMA event. Wilson will be looking to rebound from his first professional MMA defeat, which came to Prentice Ingram at a No Mercy Extreme Fighting event. Chavez got a cupcake of a fight ahead of him and he will show why with a victory over Wilson on Thursday Night.
A middleweight division fight is happening next as Vadiano La Luz (1-2-0) faces Brennan “The Irish Bad Boy†Ward (5-1-0). La Luz recently achieved his first professional MMA victory, which came over Matt Madrid at a Mescalero Warrior Challenge event. Ward will be looking to rebound from his first professional MMA defeat, which came to Aaron Johnson at Bellator 89. Ward has a bright future ahead of him despite the quick loss at Bellator 89 and he will get back on track by defeating La Luz.
Up next is a lightweight division fight as Blas Avena (7-6-0-1NC) takes on Lenny “The Godfather†Lovato Jr. (8-1-0). Avena enters the fight riding a two fight losing streak, with those losses coming to UFC veterans Brock Jardine and Josh Neer. Lovato Jr. will be looking to rebound from his first professional MMA defeat, which came at the hands of UFC veteran Gabe Ruediger. Lovato Jr. will be picking up the biggest victory of his professional MMA career when he defeats the former WEC veteran in Avena.
Headlining this portion of the card is a women’s bantamweight division fight as Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter†Holm (2-0-0) battles Katie Merrill (1-0-0). Holm is currently undefeated as a professional MMA fighter, recently defeating Strikeforce veteran Jan Finney. Merrill returns to the cage after a year-plus break from MMA competition, defeating Kaline Medeiros in his lone pro bout. Holm is one of the best strikers in women’s MMA thanks to her pro boxing experience and she will remain undefeated on Thursday Night.
