BELLATOR 91 SPIKE TV MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 2/25/2013 1:22 PM

This coming weekend will end with a UFC event in Japan, but it all starts off with a title defense at Bellator 91. The Bellator Light Heavyweight Title will be defended for the first time ever on Thursday Night as champion Christian M’Pumbu faces Attila Vegh. Also, the lightweight tournament semi-finals will be taking place and we get an added fight in the bantamweight division.

Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division fight as Josh “The Destroya” Montoya (10-7-0) competes against Ed “Wild” West (17-7-0). Montoya enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak, defeating both Jason Sampson and Frank Morris. West competed in the season seven bantamweight tournament, losing to Marcos Galvao in the opening round. West has competed in three previous Bellator tournaments and will get an opportunity at a fourth as he defeats Montoya.

A lightweight tournament semi-final fight is up next as Saad Awad (13-4-0) faces Will “Ill Will” Brooks (9-0-0). Awad punched his ticket to the tournament semi-finals when he defeated Guillaume DeLorenzi at Bellator 87. Brooks earned his spot in the tournament’s second round when he defeated Ricardo Tirloni at Bellator 87. This is a classic striker versus grappler encounter, but it will be Brooks remaining undefeated and advancing to the finals.

Up next is another lightweight tournament semi-final fight as Jason “The Finisher” Fischer (6-1-0) battles David “The Caveman” Rickels (12-1-0). Fischer will be entering the tournament as an alternate, replacing an injured Alexander Sarnovskiy, who suffered a broken hand. Rickels found himself in the tournament semi-finals when he defeated Lloyd Woodard by decision at Bellator 87. Rickels has defeated Fischer previously at Bellator 82 and the same result will be occurring the second time around.

Headlining this event is a Bellator Light Heavyweight Title Fight as champion Christian “Tonton” M’Pumbu (18-4-1) defends against Attila “Pumukli” Vegh (28-4-2). M’Pumbu will be making his first defense of the light heavyweight title, which he won by defeating Richard Haler in a tournament final at Bellator 45. Vegh earned his shot at the gold by winning to 2012 Bellator “Summer Series”, defeating Travis Wiuff in the finals. These are two fighters who could take the fight on the feet or on the ground, but it will be Vegh becoming the new champion.
