UFC 158 FX PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 3/14/2013 12:33 PM

The UFC’s first big grudge match of 2013 will be happening this Saturday Night when Georges St. Pierre battles Nick Diaz. The preliminary card, which airs live on the FX Network, will feature several great fights worth checking out. There are four good fights worth checking out, including the welterweight division debut of a former middleweight title challenger.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division fight as Daron “The Detroit Superstar” Cruickshank (12-2-0) competes against John “The Bull” Makdessi (10-2-0). Cruickshank is currently undefeated in UFC competition, defeating both Henry Martinez and Chris Tickle. Makdessi ended a two fight losing streak at UFC 154 when he defeated Sam Stout by unanimous decision. This should be one of the better striking battles of the event, but it will be Cruickshank remaining undefeated in UFC competition.

Welterweights will step into the octagon next as Jordan “Young Gun” Mein (26-8-0) battles Dan Miller (14-6-0-1NC). Mein will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he did win two of three during his time in Strikeforce. Miller is currently undefeated as a welterweight in the UFC, having defeated Ricardo Funch at UFC On FX IV. Mein has a good amount of hype behind him heading into his UFC debut and he will live up to the hype by defeating Miller.

Up next is a featherweight division contest as Antonio “Pato” Carvalho (15-5-0) takes on Darren Elkins (15-2-0). Carvalho enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak, having defeated Rodrigo Damm and Daniel Pineda. Elkins has won five of six in UFC competition, most notably defeating UFC Ultimate Fighter champion Diego Brandao. The winner of this fight should become a contender for the featherweight title and that challenger will be Elkins.

Headlining this portion of the card is a welterweight division fight as Patrick “The Predator” Cote (18-8-0) faces “Vicious” Bobby Voelker (24-8-0). Cote will be making his debut as a welterweight in this fight, once challenging UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90. Voelker will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he did win four of five fights in Strikeforce competition. Cote needs to return to his old form to remain in the UFC after this fight and he will do so to start off his welterweight run successfully.
