WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING II NBC SPORTS MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 3/22/2013 1:30 PM

After a successful debut in late 2012, the World Series Of Fighting returns this Saturday Night with another loaded card. The event will be headlined by Anthony Johnson’s heavyweight debut, which will be against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski. Also, there is a huge bantamweight division fight and a former WEC Middleweight Champion is in action.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division fight as Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante (17-6-1-2NC) competes against Justin Gaethje (7-0-0). Cavalcante is currently undefeated in WSOF competition, having defeated TJ O’Brien at the inaugural event. Gaethje is an undefeated fighter who recently defeated UFC veteran Drew Fickett at a Rage In The Cage event. Cavalcante has been hit or miss in his most recent MMA appearances, but it will be a miss for him as Gaethje gets the biggest win of his career.

Middleweights will be in action next as David Branch (11-3-0) does battle against Paulo “Ely” Filho (23-4-2). Branch has won three of four since his UFC release, which came after a defeat to Rousimar Palhares at UFC On Versus III. Filho will be competing in North America for the first time since his controversial rematch with Chael Sonnen at WEC 36 in November 2008. Filho has not been his dominating self in many years now, so it will be Branch picking up his second victory in WSOF competition.

A pair of welterweights will be battling next as “The People’s Warrior” Josh Burkman (24-9-0) faces Aaron “A-Train” Simpson (12-4-0). Burkman enters the fight riding a three fight winning streak, which includes victories over UFC veterans Jamie Yager and Gerald Harris. Simpson will be competing for the first time since his UFC release, which came after a loss to Mike Pierce at UFC On FX V. The winner of this bout could be in line for a WSOF Welterweight Title bout and that fighter getting the shot will be Burkman.

Up next is a bantamweight division fight as Marlon Moraes (9-4-1) stands across the cage from Tyson Nam (12-4-0). Moraes is coming off of the biggest victory of his career, which was a decision victory over Miguel Torres at the first WSOF event. Nam enters the fight riding a four fight winning streak, which includes a victory over current Bellator Bantamweight Champion Eduardo Dantas. This could be one of the biggest bantamweight fights outside of the UFC at the moment, but it will be Nam getting the victory.

Headlining this card is a heavyweight division fight as Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski (19-9-0-1NC) battles Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (14-4-0). Arlovski is a former UFC Heavyweight Champion and will be entering the fight riding a four fight winning streak. Johnson will be competing for the first time as a heavyweight, as he previously competed as a welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight. This should be nothing short of a great stand up war, but it will be Johnson knocking out the former UFC champion.
