INVICTA FC V PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 4/3/2013 8:52 PM

The women’s MMA scene has exploded in recent years and one of the main reasons is due to the Invicta FC promotion. The company is returning for its fifth event, following a disastrous iPPV attempt for the fourth Invicta FC event. The preliminary card is worth checking out as well, with six bouts featuring some top up and coming female talent.

Kicking off the action is a strawweight division bout as Kathina “Kill Switch” Catron (2-1-0) competes against Rose “Thug” Namajunas (1-0-0). Catron will be looking to rebound from her first professional MMA defeat, which came at the hands of Jordan Nicole Gaza at Xtreme Fight Night 11. Namajunas made her professional MMA debut at Invicta FC IV, defeating Emily Kagan via third round submission. Catron looked great until her first professional defeat, but she will rebound to end the undefeated streak of Namajunas.

Atomweights will be entering the cage next as Alexandra Chambers (3-1-0) is in action against Jodie Esquibel (3-0-0). Chambers had a good two fight rung in the Rize promotion, having defeated both Jessica Tolhurst and Claire Fryer. Esquibel is an undefeated fighter who previously competed at Invicta FC IV, defeating Liz McCarthy by decision. Esquibel is undefeated as a pro for a good reason and she will show why as she remains undefeated on Friday Night.

A pair of featherweights will be competing next as Mollie “Miss Mollie” Estes (1-1-0) does battle with Julia “The Jewel” Budd (4-2-0). Estes is looking to rebound from his first MMA defeat, which came to Randi Miller back at Invicta FC I. Budd is currently undefeated in Invicta FC competition, having defeated both Elina Nilsson and Danielle West. Budd actually came into this fight as a late replacement for another fighter, but she will get the win either way.

We move to the flyweight division for the next fight as Katja “Killer Bunny” Kankaanpaa (7-0-0) battles Juliana “Ju Thai” Carneiro Lima (5-0-0). Kankaanpaa is coming off of the biggest victory of her MMA career as she defeated Aisling Daly at Cage Warriors 51. Lima is also undefeated entering this fight, having spent the majority of her career in the Brasil Fight promotion. This is a fight that should have been included on the main card, but it will be Kankaanpaa remaining undefeated in the end.

Up next is a bantamweight division fight as Jessamyn “The Gun” Duke (2-0-0) takes on Miriam Nakamoto (1-0-0). Duke has spent her entire professional MMA career in Invicta FC, having defeated both Suzie Montero and Marciea Allen. Nakamoto made her professional MMA debut in September 2012, defeating Elizabeth Phillips by TKO. These are two fighters in the early stages of potentially great MMA careers, but it will be Duke keeping her undefeated streak alive.

Headlining this portion of the card is an atomweight division fight as “Sassy” Cassie Rodish (4-3-0) faces Simona Soukupova (3-2-1). Rodish enters the fight riding a four fight winning streak, with a pair of victories coming in Invicta FC competition. Soukupova has only won one of her last four fights, with that victory coming over Elodie Puget at a Kayo MMA event. Rodish is currently riding an really good winning streak right now and that streak will continue on Friday Night.
