In what could be considered the biggest lightweight division fight of 2013 will be taking place on Saturday Night at UFC On Fox VII when Ben Henderson battles Gilbert Melendez. Also, the winner of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in Daniel Cormier faces former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. Plus, Nate Diaz competes for the first time since losing a lightweight title fight and Matt Brown looks to continue his win streak.
Kicking off the action is a welterweight division fight as Matt “The Immortal†Brown (16-11-0) competes against Jordan “Young Gun†Mein (27-8-0). Brown enters the fight riding a four fight winning streak, with a notable victory over Mike Swick at UFC On Fox V. Mein is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Dan Miller by TKO at UFC 158. This should be the best slugfest on the entire card, but it will be Mein remaining undefeated in the UFC.
Lightweights will step into the cage next as Nate Diaz (16-8-0) takes on Josh “The Punk†Thomson (19-5-0-1NC). Diaz will be competing for the first time since losing a UFC Lightweight Title shot to Ben Henderson at UFC ON Fox V. Thomson will be returning to the UFC for the first time in nearly nine years, but did become the Strikeforce Lightweight Champion in between the runs. Thomson’s career has been plagued by tons of injuries in recent years and they will be catching up to him as Diaz gets back in the win column.
Up next is a heavyweight division fight as Daniel Cormier (11-0-0) will be standing across the cage from Frank Mir (16-6-0). Cormier will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he did win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. Mir will be competing for the first time since UFC 146, where he lost a UFC Heavyweight Title shot to Junior Dos Santos. These two have been doing a lot of trash talk leading up to this bout, but it will be Cormier winning and possibly getting a title shot of his own.
Headlining this card is a UFC Lightweight Title fight as champion Ben “Smooth†Henderson (18-2-0) defends against Gilbert “El Nino†Melendez (21-2-0). Henderson will be making the third defense of his championship, last defeating Nate Diaz at UFC On Fox V. Melendez will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he was the final Strikeforce Lightweight Champion. This fight has the potential to be the best of the year, but it will be Henderson holding onto the championship.
