CAGE WARRIORS 54 MMAJUNKIE.COM MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 5/3/2013 9:53 PM

With no big events running stateside this weekend, we will head across the pond to the United Kingdom for a loaded Cage Warriors card. The card will be headlined by UFC veteran Jesse Taylor, who will be defending his Cage Warriors Middleweight Title. Also, if that were not enough, some of the best fighters on the international circuit are stepping into the cage.

Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division fight as Martin “Mr. Pink” McDonough (10-4-0) competes against Mark Platts (10-9-0). McDonough will be entering the fight riding a four fight winning streak, with all of those victories coming in the opening round. Platts will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak and he has not achieved a victory in over a year. McDonough is on a hot streak right now and that streak will continue with another victory on Saturday Night.

Another bantamweight division contest is up next as Brett “The Pikey” Johns (5-0-0) is in action against James MacAlister (7-1-0). Johns is currently undefeated in Cage Warriors competition, having defeated Sam Gilbert at Cage Warriors 49. MacAlister enters the fight riding a six fight winning streak, primarily competing in the On Top MMA promotion. This is one of the better bantamweight fights on any card at the moment, but it will be Johns remaining undefeated in the end.

Lightweight action will be taking place next as Jason “Daddy Cool” Ball (20-11-0) stands across the cage from Ivan “Buki” Buchinger (21-4-0). Ball enters the fight riding a two fight winning streak, plus he has competed against UFC veterans Colin Fletcher, Paul Sass and Andre Winner. Buchinger has won three of his last four bouts, with that lone loss coming to UFC veteran Conor McGregor. These are two well-traveled MMA veterans in the UK MMA scene, but it will be Buchinger picking up the victory.

More lightweight action is taking place next as Mark Glover (6-1-1) battles Lewis “The Foot” Long (6-2-0). Glover will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, but he has not competed in nearly two years. Long has won four of his last five professional fights, but he is currently winless in Cage Warriors competition. The long layoff is going to hurt Glover in this one as Long gets his first victory under the Cage Warriors banner.

Up next is a welterweight division fight as Diego “The Silencer” Gonzalez (15-7-0-1NC) faces Danny “Hot Chocolate” Roberts (7-1-0). Gonzales has rotated wins and losses in his last five fights, with one of those losses coming to UFC veteran Andre Winner. Roberts is currently undefeated in Cage Warriors competition, having defeated both David Howell and Jack Mason. Roberts has been looking pretty dominant in Cage Warriors competition and that will continue as he defeats Gonzalez.

Headlining this card is a Cage Warriors Middleweight Title bout as champion Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (25-9-0) defends against John “The White Mike Tyson” Phillips (16-5-0-1NC). Taylor will be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating Chris Fields at Cage Warriors 51. Phillips earned an opportunity at the title after defeating Chris Fields by submission at Cage Warriors 48, but an injury caused him to miss the first chance against Taylor. Taylor has been on quite a roll as of late and he will keep the championship around his waist as he defeats Phillips in the main event.
