BELLATOR 96 SPIKE TV MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 6/18/2013 12:24 PM

The 2013 Bellator “Summer Series” kicks off on Wednesday Night with a loaded card featuring King Mo, UFC veterans and the return of War Machine. The event was originally set to be headlined by a lightweight title bout, but that fight was moved due to injuries, thus a between King Mo and Seth Petruzelli will headline the card. Also, there are more bouts in the light heavyweight and heavyweight tournament that will be worth checking out.

Kicking off the action is a welterweight division fight as Blas Avena (8-6-0-1NC) competes against War Machine (12-4-0). Avena has only won one of his last four bouts, with that lone victory coming over Lenny Lovato at Bellator 91. Machine is returning to the cage after an almost two year break from competition, with his last fight being a victory over UFC veteran Roger Huerta. Bellator is banking on Machine to be a big star for them in the future, but Avena will pull the upset to halt those plans.

A Bellator Heavyweight Tournament opening round fight is next as Vitaly Minakov (10-0-0) battles Ron “The Monster” Sparks (8-1-0). Minakov is currently undefeated as a professional MMA fighter, plus he has defeated UFC veterans Fabiano Scherner and Eddie Sanchez. Sparks made it to the semi-finals of the season seven heavyweight tournament before losing to Eric Prindle. These are the two favorites to win the whole tournament, but it will be Minakov advancing to the finals.

Up next is a Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament opening round fight as Jacob “The Psycho” Noe (11-2-0-1NC) faces Renato “Babalu” Sobral (37-10-0). Noe made it to the semi-finals of the season eight light heavyweight tournament before losing to Mikhail Zayats. Sobral competed in the season eight light heavyweight tournament, but lost to Mikhail Zayats in the opening round. This could be the last big opportunity for Sobral and he will be successful as he defeats Noe to go to the finals.

Headlining this card is a Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament opening round fight as Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (9-2-0-1NC) takes on Seth “The Silverback” Petruzelli (14-7-0). Lawal made it to the semi-finals of the season eight light heavyweight tournament before losing to Emanuel Newton. Petruzelli also competed in the season eight light heavyweight tournament, losing to Jacob Noe in the opening round. The majority of this fight should be a slugfest, but it will be Petruzelli pulling the upset and advancing to the finals.
