At some point, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva is going to lose the gold, but will it happen at UFC 162? That is a question being asked by MMA writers and fans alike, especially with the undefeated Chris Weidman challenging him. Besides a top notch main event, the UFC 162 pay-per-view card features several key fights in the featherweight division as well.
Kicking off the action is a featherweight division fight as Dennis Siver (21-8-0) competes against Cub Swanson (19-5-0). Siver is currently undefeated as a featherweight in the UFC, defeating both Diego Nunes and Nam Phan. Swanson will enter the fight riding a four fight winning streak, with a notable victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC On Fuel TV VII. The winner of this fight could be in line for the next title shot and it will be Swanson getting that title shot.
We move to the middleweight division for the next fight as Tim “The Barbarian†Boetsch (16-5-0) does battle with “The Filipino Wrecking Machine†Mark Munoz (12-3-0). Boetsch has won four of his last five fights, but his last fight was a loss to Constantinos Philippou at UFC 155. Munoz has also won four of his last five outings, but he has not competed in a fight in almost a full year. This is a must win fight if either competitor wants to remain relevant in the division and it will be Boetsch getting that win.
More middleweight division action is up next as Roger Gracie (6-1-0) dukes it out with Tim Kennedy (15-4-0). Gracie will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but did win four of five fights while in the Strikeforce promotion. Kennedy will also be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he was a two time challenger for the Strikeforce Middleweight Title. It is rare that two fighters making their UFC debuts get to fight on pay-per-view, but it will be Kennedy making a successful promotional debut.
Up next is a featherweight division fight as Frankie “The Answer†Edgar (15-4-1) battles Charles “Do Bronx†Oliveira (16-3-0-1NC). Edgar will enter the fight riding a three fight losing streak and will not be competing in a title fight for the first time in over three years. Oliveira has won two of his last three bouts in the UFC, with a notable victory over Jonathan Brookins at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 15 Finale. This is a must win fight if Edgar is to remain a threat in any division and Edgar will fix his quirks to get his first win as a featherweight.
Headlining this card is a UFC Middleweight Title Fight as champion Anderson “The Spider†Silva (33-4-0) defends against “All American†Chris Weidman (9-0-0). Silva has successfully defended the championship eleven times already, but last defeated Stephan Bonnar at light heavyweight. Weidman is an undefeated fighter who earned an opportunity at the gold when he defeated Mark Munoz by knockout at UFC On Fuel TV IV. This fight will mark the first time Silva has defended the belt against an undefeated fighter, but I see an upset as Weidman leaves with the championship.
