UFC 163 PAY-PER-VIEW PREVIEW

By David Tees on 8/2/2013 4:23 PM

The UFC’s highly anticipated return to Brazil takes place this Saturday Night with Jose Aldo defending the featherweight gold. There are title implications in the semi-main event as well, with Phil Davis and Lyoto Machida battling for a potential title shot. Also, a TUF Brazil champion is back in the UFC and Thales Leitas returns to the promotion after some time away.

Kicking off the action is a flyweight division fight as John “Hands Of Stone” Lineker (21-6-0) competes against Jose Maria “No Chance” Tome (33-3-0-2NC). Lineker will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, defeating both Yasuhiro Urushitani and Azamat Gashimov. Tome will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he does so on the strength of a sixteen fight winning streak. This is a much bigger fight in the division than it seems on paper, but it will be Tome getting the win either way.

Middleweights will step into the cage next as Thales Leites (20-4-0) is in action against Tom “Kong” Watson (16-5-0). Leites is returning to the UFC after a four year absence, but he did win six of seven fights prior to his return. Watson will be looking to build on the momentum of his first UFC win, which came over Stanislav Nedkov at UFC On Fuel TV VII. Leites has been a beast since exiting the UFC the first time and his style is kryptonite to Watson’s style, which is what will give him the victory.

Another middleweight division fight is up next as Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira (5-2-0) battles Thiago “Marreta” Santos (8-1-0). Ferreira is currently undefeated in UFC competition and was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter: Brazil I. Santos will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of the Watch Out Combat Show promotion. This fight seems like it was set up as a showcase for Ferreira and it will be Ferreira picking up the victory.

Up next is a light heavyweight division fight as “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis (11-1-0-1NC) faces Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (19-3-0). Davis has won seven of nine fights under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 112. Machida has won three of his last four in UFC competition, most notably defeating Dan Henderson at UFC 157. The winner of this fight may find himself in title contention and it will be Machida picking up the big victory.

Headlining this card is a UFC Featherweight Title Fight as champion Jose “Scarface” Aldo (22-1-0) defends against “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (13-3-0). Aldo has successfully defended the championship six times already, last defeating Frankie Edgar at UFC 156. Jung is stepping in as a late replacement for Anthony Pettis, but he is currently undefeated in UFC competition. This fight does not have that same “big time” feel since Pettis dropped out, but it will be Aldo keeping the gold either way.
