As Saturday comes along, there will have been three of five big MMA events that have already aired on Friday alone. That will not deter fans from a great card from cage Warriors, a card that will be headlined by a featherweight title bout. Also, the bantamweight title tournament finals will be taking place and the brother of a UFC veteran will be in action.
(Note: Since the finals of the bantamweight tournament will not be known until the main card begins, there will be no preview of that fight in this column.)
Kicking off the action is a welterweight division encounter as Lee Caers (8-3-0) competes against Aaron Thomas (4-1-0). Caers is currently undefeated in Cage Warriors competition, having defeated Kevin Reed at Cage Warriors 49. Thomas is also undefeated in Cage Warriors competition, with his win coming over Charlie Leary at Cage Warriors 40. These are two fighters who have a golden opportunity to make an impact on the Cage Warriors main card and it will be Caers making that impact.
A pair of featherweights are competing next as Dave Hill (10-3-0) does battle against Brian “The Pikeman†Moore (7-2-0). Hill has only won one of his last four fights, with one of those losses coming to UFC veteran Conor McGregor. Moore will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, but this fight will mark his Cage Warriors debut. Hill has been in a pretty bad funk as of late and that funk will continue as Moore picks up his first Cage Warriors win.
Lightweights will be featured next as Lewis “The Foot†Long (7-2-0) battles Tommy “Z Gonz†Maguire (14-5-0). Long has split both of his previous Cage Warriors bouts, defeating Mark Glover and suffering a defeat to Paul Redmond. Maguire has won five of his last six heading into his Cage Warriors debut and he is the brother of UFC veteran John Maguire. Maguire, at one point, was close to a deal with the UFC and he will get even closer as he defeats Long in this one.
Up next is a middleweight division fight as Mats Nilsson (10-2-1) takes on Denniston “Mad Max†Sutherland (20-11-0). Nilsson is currently undefeated in Cage Warriors competition, having defeated Tom Speer and Chris Scott. Sutherland has rotated wins and losses in his last six fights, with his last fight being a loss to UFC veteran Karlos Vemola. Nilsson could get himself a title shot if he pulls out the win over Sutherland, which is exactly what is going to happen.
Headlining this portion of the card is a Cage Warriors Featherweight Title bout as champion Jim “The Beast†Alers (10-1-0) defends against Martin Svensson (12-3-0). Alers will be making the first defense of his title, which he won by defeating Joni Salovaara at Cage Warriors 53. Svensson will be making his Cage Warriors debut in this fight, but he is a longtime veteran of The Zone FC promotion. This is a great way to close a card with two title bouts, but it will be Alers holding onto the gold when this one is all said and done.
