The UK-based Cage Warriors promotion returns on Saturday with a card featuring a tournament to crown a new lightweight champion. The event will be streamed on MMAjunkie.com (Main Card) and Facebook (Preliminary Card0, but there are also a few fights that will only be for those in attendance. The unaired portion of the preliminary card is a noteworthy one though, because it will feature a fight for the lightweight tournament reserve spot.
Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division fight as Cameron “Killa Cam†Else (0-1-0) competes against Patricky “Paddy†Pimblett (4-0-0). Else is returning to action after being away for a little more than a year, his lone pro fight was a loss to Spencer Hewitt at Ultimate Challenge MMA 30. Pimblett is currently undefeated under the Cage Warriors banner, having defeated Florian Calin at Cage Warriors 56. Barring a minor upset from taking place in this one, Pimblett should walk away with an easy victory to remain undefeated.
Middleweight action is taking place next as Ben Constantine (4-4-0) is in action against Charlie Watts (3-1-0). Constantine has only won one of his last three bouts, with that lone win coming over Kester Mumba at an Ultimate Impact MMA event. Watts has won two of three under the Cage Warriors banner, but will be looking to bounce back from his first career defeat. Watts may have had a setback in his last bout, but he will rebound to defeat his overmatched opponent.
Up next is a lightweight tournament alternate’s bout as Sean “Sexy Curls†Carter (6-0-0) battles Richard “The Myth†Griffin (5-9-0). Carter has won two straight fights in Cage Warriors as he last defeated Adam Boussif at Cage Warriors 56. Griffin has only won one of his last three, plus has fought against UFC veterans Paul Kelly and John Hathaway. How Griffin even got into this position is beyond me, but Carter will win to get the alternate’s position in the tournament.
Headlining this portion of the card is a bantamweight division fight as Aaron “Smackwell†Blackwell (11-9-1) faces “Evil†Kris Edwards (8-6-0). Blackwell will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak and he has not lost a fight in over three years. Edwards will enter the fight riding a three fight losing streak, but did compete in last month’s Cage Warriors Featherweight Title Tournament. This is a pivotal fight for both fighters at this point in their careers, but it will be Blackwell keeping his streak alive.
