Trilogies are a thing of rarity in the MMA world and when one comes to pass, like the main event of UFC 166, the MMA world takes notice. This weekend’s highly anticipated UFC event will feature the rubber match between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos. Also, Daniel Cormier and Roy Nelson are set to settle the rivalry, while a big lightweight division fight is on tap.
Kicking off the action is a flyweight division fight as John “The Magician†Dodson (14-6-0) competes against Darrell “The Mongoose†Montague (13-2-0). Dodson will be competing for the first time since losing a UFC Flyweight Title bout to Demetrious Johnson at UFC On Fox VI. Montague will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but has previously fought UFC veterans Ulysses Gomez and Ian McCall. Montague is considered the best flyweight prospect in the UFC right now, but he will fall short to the much quicker Dodson.
Heavyweights are in action next as Gabriel “Napao†Gonzaga (15-7-0) does battle with Shawn “The Savage†Jordan (15-4-0). Gonzaga has won three of four fights in his second UFC run, most notably defeating Ben Rothwell at UFC On FX VII. Jordan will be entering the fight on the strength of a two fight winning streak, last defeating Pat Barry at UFC 161. Jordan is slowly emerging as a contender in the heavyweight division and he will take the next step with a win over Gonzaga.
A lightweight division bout is up next as Gilbert “El Nino†Melendez (21-3-0) battles Diego “The Dream†Sanchez (24-5-0). Melendez is currently winless in UFC competition, losing a UFC Lightweight Title bout to Ben Henderson at UFC On Fox VII. Sanchez has been undefeated since returning to the lightweight division, having defeated Takanori Gomi at UFC On Fuel TV VIII. This should be the show stealing fight for the entire card and it will be Melendez getting back on track with a win.
Up next is a heavyweight division contest as Daniel Cormier (12-0-0) takes on Roy “Big Country†Nelson (19-8-0). Cormier is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Frank Mir by decision at UFC On Fox VII. Nelson has won three of his last four fights, most notably defeating Cheick Kongo by knockout at UFC 159. Nelson simply does not have the tools to defeat Cormier here and it will be Cormier notching the win before dropping to light heavyweight.
Headlining this card is a UFC Heavyweight Title Fight as champion Cain Velasquez (12-1-0) defends against Junior “Cigano†Dos Santos (16-2-0). Velasquez won the second meeting between the two when he defeated Dos Santos by unanimous decision at UFC 155. Dos Santos won the initial meeting between the two fighters when he knocked out Velasquez at UFC On Fox I. Not much has changed for both fighters skill wise since the last meeting, Velasquez will get the win and end the rivalry.
