UFC FIGHT NIGHT 35 FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/13/2014 12:31 PM

The UFC has dominated the early part of 2014 with events as UFC Fight Night 35 will be the second of three events from the UFC this month alone. This event will also be the first live UFC event to air on Fox Sports 1 this year and it is a card worth checking out. The same can be said about the four fight preliminary card on Fox Sports 1, with a key lightweight division fight in the featured spot.

Kicking off the action is a flyweight division attraction as Alptekin “The Turkish Delight” Ozkilic (9-1-0) competes against Louis “Da Last Samurai” Smolka (6-0-0). Ozkilic is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Darren Uyenoyama at UFC On Fox IX. Smolka will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he is a longtime veteran of the Pacific Xtreme Combat promotion. Ozkilic is somebody the UFC has high hopes on to be a contender in the division and he will show why when he hands Smolka the first loss of his career.

A pair of middleweights will be in action next as Brian “B-Hue” Houston (4-1-0) battles Trevor” Hot Sauce” Smith (10-4-0). Houston is currently winless in UFC competition, dropping a fight to Derek Brunson at UFC Fights For The Troops III. Smith is also winless under the UFC banner, with his loss coming to Ed Herman at UFC On Fox VIII. This is a must win situation for both competitors in this one, but it will be the more experienced Smith getting a win.

Up next is a lightweight division bout as Elias “Xuxu” Silverio (9-0-0) will take on Isaac Vallie-Flagg (14-3-1). Silverio is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Joao Zeferino by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 28. Vallie-Flagg is coming off of the biggest win over his career, which came over longtime MMA veteran Yves Edwards at UFC 156. Vallie-Flagg is riding a huge wave of momentum after defeating Edwards and he will ride that momentum to defeat Silverio in this one.

Headlining this portion of the card is a lightweight division fight as Justin “Fast Eddy” Edwards (8-3-0) faces Ramsey Nijem (7-4-0). Edwards has rotated wins and losses throughout his UFC run, with his last fight being a loss to Brandon Thatch at UFC Fight Night 27. Nijem will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak, dropping fights to both Myles Jury and James Vick. This is a must win fight if either fighter hopes to stay under a UFC contract and it will be Edwards grinding out the victory here.
