MAXIMUM FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS 39 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/15/2014 12:47 PM

In between a pair of big events from the UFC and World Series Of Fighting will be a stellar card from the Maximum Fighting Championships. The first event to air live on AXS TV in 2014 will be headlined by a pair of title fights in the heavyweight and lightweight divisions. Also, there will be four other fights with eight top prospects, with a few veterans of the UFC stepping into the ring as well.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division affair as Andrew “Andrewconda” McInnes (3-1-0) competes against “Dirty” Dan Ring (5-2-1). McInnes will be making his MFC debut in this fight, with none of his professional fights going past the opening round. Ring has won three of four under the MFC banner, but will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak. McInnes has not faced the level of competition that Ring has faced at this stage in their careers, which is the tipping point for Ring’s upcoming victory.

Another lightweight division bout is next as Mehdi Baghdad (9-3-0) is in action against Sean Powers (8-3-0). Baghdad will make his MFC debut riding a five fight winning streak and he has previously fought UFC veteran Charles Oliveira. Powers will also be making his MFC debut in this fight, he has also previously competed in Bellator with a victory over David Allred at Bellator 90. Baghdad is entering this fight on a pretty good winning streak and he will extend that streak when he defeats Powers.

A pair of middleweights will be duking it out next as Gilbert Smith (7-2-0) does battle against Jason “The Mover” South (10-1-0). Smith has been undefeated since his UFC release, which came after a loss to Bubba McDaniel at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. South will be fighting for the first time since losing an MFC Middleweight Title fight to Sam Alvey at MFC 38. South was moments away from becoming a champion in the MFC, but he will rebound to defeat the UFC veteran in this one.

Light heavyweight division action will be taking place next as Sean O’Connell (14-4-0) battles Victor “The Matrix” Valimaki (17-8-0). O’Connell will make his MFC debut coming off of the biggest win of his career, as he defeated UFC veteran Marvin Eastman at Showdown Fights 12. Valimaki has only won one of his last four fights and this fight will be his first bout in well over a full year. O’Connell is riding a big wave of momentum after defeating Eastman, he will defeat Valimaki to keep the momentum going.

Up next is the MFC Lightweight Title Decision Fight as Tom “Da Tank” Gallacchio (17-8-0) faces Kurt “The Hurt” Southern (13-4-0). Gallacchio has won two of his last five heading into his MFC debut and he will be dropping from welterweight for this fight. Southern has won two of three under the MFC banner and he will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak. Southern is quickly becoming the next big breakout star of the MFC promotion and he will add to that status when he wins the championship.

Headlining this card is the MFC Heavyweight Title fight as champion Anthony Hamilton (11-2-0) defends against Darrill “The Boss” Schoonover (13-5-0). Hamilton will be making the first defense of his championship, which he won be defeating Smealinho Rama at MFC 38. Schoonover is a UFC veteran who enters the fight riding a three fight winning streak, which includes a victory over UFC veteran Paul Buentello. Schoonover’s best days are beyond him and that will show as Hamilton dominates him to keep the gold.
