Capping off the first big week of MMA action in 2014 will be another big card from the World Series Of Fighting promotion. The event will be headlined by a pair of title bouts in both the lightweight and women’s strawweight divisions. The five fight preliminary card is loaded as well, with both a Strikeforce and Bellator veteran stepping into the cage.
Kicking off the action is a middleweight division attraction as “The Fresh Prince†Jose Caceres (5-4-0) competes against Anderson “Son†Melo (10-7-0). Caceres has won two of his last three fights heading into his WSOF debut and he is a longtime veteran of the Championship Fighting Alliance promotion. Melo will also be making his WSOF debut in this fight, plus he has previously fought UFC veterans Steve Bruno and Renee Forte. Melo has fought far better competition than Caceres at this point in their careers and that experience is what will carry him to a victory.
Featherweights will be stepping into the cage next as Freddy Assuncao (7-1-0) does battle against Brenson Hansen (5-1-0). Assuncao will make his WSOF debut on a five fight winning streak, which includes a victory over UFC veteran Kit Cope. Hansen is currently undefeated in WSOF competition, defeating both Tom Marcellino and Josh Montalvo. Assuncao may not be well known to most WSOF fans at this point, but he will get a lot more attention as he hands Hansen his first WSOF defeat.
A pair of bantamweights will be competing next as Sidemar “Sideco†Honorio (8-4-0) battles Alexis “The Exorcist†Vila (13-4-0). Honorio is currently winless in WSOF competition, having dropped a fight to Jimmie Rivera at WSOF V. Vila is a Bellator veteran who is also winless in WSOF competition, with his loss coming to Josh Rettinghouse at the WSOF VI. This is a must win situation if either fighter plans to make a run in the WSOF and it will be the more experienced Vila getting the win.
Up next is a heavyweight division fight as Scott “The Bear†Barrett (14-3-0) takes on Derrick “Caveman†Mehmen (16-5-0). Barrett has won four of his last five fights heading into his WSOF debut, with one of those victories coming over UFC veteran Mike Wessel. Mehmen is currently undefeated in WSOF competition, having defeated Rolles Gracie at the WSOF V. This is a fight that should have been part of the main card, but it will be Mehmen remaining undefeated in WSOF competition.
Headlining this portion of the card is a welterweight division fight as Valdir “BB Monster†Araujo (14-4-0) faces Tyler “The Evolution†Stinson (26-9-0). Araujo will be making his WSOF debut in this fight and he is a longtime veteran of the Championship Fighting Alliance promotion. Stinson has been undefeated since getting released from Strikeforce, most notably defeating UFC veteran Rob Kimmons at Epic Fight Night I. This is another main card worthy fight that is on the preliminary card, but it will be Stinson getting the win on his return to the big stage.
