A big weekend of MMA competition may be capped off by the UFC, but it all begins on Friday Night with Resurrection Fighting Alliance 12. The first RFA event of 2014 will be headlined by two title fights in both the featherweight and bantamweight divisions. Also, there will be a clash of UFC veterans on the card and a pair of undefeated female competitors will do battle.
Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division affair as Marcus Kowal (3-1-1) competes against Zac Chavez (2-0-0). Kowal will enter the fight winning only one of his last three bouts, with that lone win coming over Kevin Michel at a Respect In The Cage event. Chavez is currently undefeated in RFA competition, having defeated Danny Mainus by split decision at RFA VII. This is a fight that is worthy to kick off the show, but it will be Chavez remaining undefeated when it’s all said and done.
Welterweights will be stepping into the cage next as James Moontasri (5-1-0) is in action against Rick “Boomer†Reger (6-0-0). Moontasri is currently undefeated in RFA competition, having defeated RJ Clifford by TKO at RFA IX. Reger will be making his RFA debut in this fight after having spent his entire career in the Gladiator Challenge promotion. The winner could find themselves in contention for the welterweight belt and it will be Reger moving closer to a title shot.
A pair of women’s strawweight fighters are up next as Justine Kish (3-0-0) stands across the cage from Randa Markos Thomas (3-0-0). Kish has previously fought under the RFA banner, having defeated Christine Stanley by submission at RFA IX. Thomas will be making his RFA debut in this fight, but she has previously defeated Legacy FC veteran Allanna Jones. Kish is a far better finisher when compared to Thomas and Kish will finish her to win the battle of the undefeated.
The middleweight division will be featured next as “King†Kevin Casey (6-3-0) battles Eddie Mendez (7-2-1-1NC). Casey has been undefeated since being released from the UFC, which came after a loss to Josh Samman at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. Mendez is competing for the first time since his UFC release, which came after a loss to Daniel Sarafian at UFC On Fuel TV X. The winner of this fight may see a return trip to the UFC and that is what Mendez will get when he defeats Casey.
Up next is an RFA Bantamweight Title Fight as champion Pedro “The Young Punisher†Munhoz (9-0-0) defends against Billy Daniels (7-0-0). Munhoz will be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating UFC veteran Jeff Curran at RFA IX. Daniels will be making his RFA debut in this fight and he has spent his entire career until this point in the Rocky Mountain Fighting Championships. Munhoz was in “beast mode†when he defeated Curran to win the gold and there will be nothing Daniels can do to stop him as he retains the gold.
Headlining this card is a fight for the vacant RFA Featherweight Title as Brian “T-City†Ortega (7-0-0) faces Keoni “Evil Genius†Koch (5-0-0). Ortega is currently undefeated under the RFA banner, having defeated Jordan Rinaldi by submission at RFA IX. Koch will be making his promotional debut in this fight and he is the brother of current UFC star Erik Koch. This is an excellent way to cap of the first RFA event of 2014, but it will be Ortega claiming the belt in the end.
