WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING CANADA I PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 2/16/2014 6:36 PM

The Canadian branch of the WSOF will be running their first event this coming Friday Night with an event that will air via tape delay on NBC Sports the following weekend. The event will be headlined by a bout that will crown the inaugural WSOF Canada Welterweight Champion. There is a loaded seven fight preliminary card that will unfortunately be unaired, but it will feature a UFC veteran in action.

Kicking off the action is a welterweight division bout as Justin Evans (0-0-0) competes against Stuart Fontaine (0-0-0). Evans will be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, but he did go undefeated as an amateur. Fontaine will also be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, winning just one of two as an amateur. This is always a pick ‘em as much as anything as you can get with two fighters making their pro debuts, but it will be Evans starting off his career on the right foot.

A pair of lightweights will be in action next as Roger “R-G-A” Evans (1-1-0) is in action against Jemark Brady (2-2-0). Alves is returning to the cage after being away from a whole decade, with his last fight coming at an Extreme Fighting Challenge III event. Brady will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak and he made his pro debut in September 2013. This fight has no business on any part of this card, but it will be Brady moving to a positive record with a victory.

Featherweight division action will be happening next as Behrang “B-Tang” Yousefi (5-3-0) does battle against Hakeem Dawodu (0-0-0). Yousefi has only won one of his last four fights and he is a longtime veteran of the King Of The Cage promotion. Dawodu will be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, with no amateur experience to speak of. Dawodu is entering this fight with a huge experience disadvantage and that will cost him as Yousefi gets back on track with a win.

We move to the bantamweight division for the next bout as Owen Carr (4-2-1-1NC) stands across the cage from Maged Hammo (5-3-0). Carr has only won one of his last four fights, with that lone win coming over Brent Fryia at Aggression Fighting Championships 20. Hammo has won two of his last three fights and he has only had one career fight go to the judge’s scorecard. This is a must win situation for both competitors and it will be Hammo getting that much needed victory.

The heavyweight division will be featured next as Tim “The Thrashing Machine” Hague (15-8-0) battles Lee “Gladiator” Mein (6-12-0). Hague has won three of six since his second UFC release, which came after a loss to Matt Mitrione at UFC Fights For The Troops II. Mein has only won one of his last four fights, with two of those losses coming to UFC veterans Rolles Gracie and James McSweeney. Mein has been put in there is be thrashed by “The Thrashing Machine” as Hague gets the easy victory in this one.

Up next is a light heavyweight division attraction as Mike Kent (9-4-0) takes on Matt “The Riot Maker” Baker (9-5-0). Kent will enter the fight riding a three fight losing streak, with two of those losses coming to UFC veterans Joe Doerkson and David Louiseau. Baker is currently winless in WSOF competition, having dropped a fight to David Perron at the WSOF VII. Kent has fought far better competition than Baker at this point in their careers and that experience will be useful as he gets the victory.

Headlining this portion of the card is a featherweight division bout as Lenny “The Show Stealer” Wheeler (6-3-0) faces Will “Leon” Romero (9-4-0). Wheeler has won two of his last three bouts, but had only competed one time in that eighteen months. Romero has won three of his last four fights, with one of those victories coming over UFC veteran Matt Veal. Romero has star power written all over him and he will show why when he defeats Wheeler in this prelim match up.
