While the 2014 Winter Olympics have seen plenty of medals handed out in recent days, there will be a pair of Olympians in the octagon at UFC 170. That is because Olympic medalist and UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey will defend her belt against fellow Olympic medalist Sara McMann. Prior to that action though, there is a four fight preliminary card airing on Fox Sports 1, with a key women’s bout in the featured spot.
Kicking off the action is a flyweight division attraction as Zach “Fun Size†Makovsky (17-4-0) competes against Joshua “The Gremlin†Sampo (11-2-0). Makovsky is currently undefeated in UFC competition and he is a former Bellator Bantamweight Champion. Sampo is another fighter who is undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Ryan Benoit at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale. The winner of this fight could quickly find themselves a contender in a very thin division, but it will be Makovsky out wrestling Sampo to stay undefeated in the UFC.
A bantamweight division contest is up next as Cody “The Renegade†Gibson (11-3-0) battles Aljamain Sterling (8-0-0). Gibson will make his UFC debut riding an eight fight winning streak and he has previously fought UFC veteran Ulysses Gomez. Sterling will also be making his UFC debut in this fight and he is a longtime veteran of the Cage Fury Fighting Championships promotion. Gibson has competed against far better competition than Sterling and that experience will carry him to a win in his UFC debut.
Up next is a bantamweight division affair as Raphael Assuncao (21-4-0) battles Pedro “The Punisher†Munhoz (10-0-0). Assuncao will enter the fight riding a five fight winning streak, last defeating TJ Dillashaw at UFC Fight Night 29. Munhoz will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he is the current Resurrection Fighting Alliance Bantamweight Champion. Munhoz will be a far better challenge than most people think going in, but Assuncao will still come out on top.
Headlining this portion of the card is a women’s bantamweight division fight as Alexis “Ally-Gator†Davis (15-5-0) faces Jessica “Evil†Eye (10-1-0-1NC). Davis is currently undefeated in UFC competition, defeating both Rosi Sexton and Liz Carmouche. Eye recently underwent a little controversy when her UFC 166 victory over Sarah Kaufman was changed to a no contest after a failed drug test. The distractions are going to cost Eye in this one and it will be Davis taking advantage to get the victory.
