UFC 172 PAY-PER-VIEW CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 4/25/2014 9:46 AM

With no Bellator, World Series Of Fighting or any other major MMA organization running this week, the sole focus of the MMA world will be on UFC 172. The event is going to be headlined by a UFC Light Heavyweight Title bout as Jon Jones defends the gold against Glover Teixeira. This event will also feature the UFC return of Anthony Johnson and a key middleweight division battle.

Kicking off the action is a featherweight division affair as Andre “Touchy” Fili (13-1-0) competes against Max “Blessed” Holloway (8-3-0). Fili is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Jeremy Larsen by TKO at UFC 166. Holloway has only won one of his last three under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Will Chope at UFC Fight Night 34. This is a huge opportunity for both competitors to compete on the big stage and it will be Fili taking advantage to get the win.

A lightweight division battle happens next as Yancy “The Kid” Medeiros (9-1-0-1NC) does battle against Jim Miller (23-4-0-1NC). Medeiros is currently winless in UFC competition and he has not won a bout in almost four full years. Miller will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, last defeating Fabricio Camoes at UFC 168. Medeiros is hugely over matched in this one and it will be Miller coasting to his third win in this bout.

The middleweight division will be featured next as Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch (17-6-0) battles Luke Rockhold (11-2-0). Boetsch has won just one of his last three under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over CB Dollaway at UFC 166. Rockhold will be looking to build off of the momentum of his first UFC win, which came over Coastas Philippou at UFC Fight Night 35. Rockhold is looking to get back into title contention and he will do so when he gets the win over Boetsch.

Up next is a light heavyweight division bout as “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis (12-1-0-1NC) takes on Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (16-4-0). Davis will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, last defeating Lyoto Machida at UFC 163. Johnson will be returning to the UFC after a two year absence, but he has gone undefeated in between runs. Davis is very close to a title shot and he will potentially get that shot when he defeats Johnson with his superior ground game.

Headlining this card is a UFC Light Heavyweight Title fight as champion Jon “Bones” Jones (19-1-0) defends against Glover Teixeira (22-2-0). Jones will be making the seventh defense of his championship, last defending it against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165. Teixeira will enter the fight riding a twenty fight winning streak and he has not lost a fight in over nine years. Teixeira may be the hardest puncher that Jones has ever faces, but Jones will use his long reach to hold onto the gold in the end.
